Mendoza led Indiana to an undefeated 16-0 season and won the Heisman Trophy. Not surprisingly, he was drafted first overall in this yearās draft by the Las Vegas Raiders.
On Monday, Trump hosted the Hoosiers at the White House, where he praised the team and head coach Curt Cignetti.
āVery special coach, Iāll tell you that,ā the president said. āJust got to know him a little bit backstage, and heās a winner. Every player on this team shared their coachās winning mindset and executed with unbelievable skill. They are skilled people.ā
Trump then turned his attention to Mendoza, who skipped the event.
āThis season was also historic because the starting quarterback, Fernando Mendoza, now, the reason heās not here, he was so nice,ā Trump said. āIām not happy, but thatās ok. The reason he didnāt is because itās spring training, right?ā
The president went on to say, āIf he was not here for other reasons like, like he didnāt like Trump or he didnāt want to come, I wouldnāt even mention him. Iād go through the wholeā Iād talk about how greatā I wouldnāt even mention the quarterbackās name. But heās a great guy, actually. And he is actually a big fan of what weāre doing for our country.ā
Earlier this month, Mendoza was asked by a reporter if he would be attending the event.
āI believe May 11 is the first day of [organized team activities],ā Mendoza said. āIf it is on the first day of OTAs, like I said, Iām at the bottom of the totem pole here. I gotta prove myself. I canāt miss practice⦠As a rookie, I donāt think thatās a good look.ā
Mendoza was one of eight Hoosiers drafted by NFL teams last month, and none of them made it to the White House.
