The Toronto Blue Jays traded for Tyler Fitzgerald to bolster their utility infield options, but he is currently playing for Triple-A Buffalo. His impressive shortstop skills were showcased in a recent game in Rochester.

ROCHESTER, N.Y. — The first thing that stands out about Tyler Fitzgerald is the smoothness with which he plays shortstop.
He's one of those guys who fields the baseball in such a graceful way that you already know that he already knows he's getting the out before the groundball has even reached his glove.
The surprise, at least a little bit, is that the grace was on display for Triple-A Buffalo on Friday night in Rochester, and not for the Toronto Blue Jays.
They traded for Fitzgerald earlier this month, seemingly angling to add a utility infielder to their roster.
Fitzgerald has had quality moments in the past at the MLB level for the San Francisco Giants, although this Spring Training didn't go well for him and he was on the outside looking in in the Bay Area. That's what made him an easy trade target for the Blue Jays.
But then Fitzgerald didn't play at all in the days after the deal that brought him to Toronto, and then he was sent down to Buffalo.
It's all a bit odd. Why trade for Fitzgerald only to deal for Lenyn Sosa (White Sox) a week later and keep him up instead of Fitzgerald?

Sure, the Bison pitching staff is probably grateful to have Fitzgerald in their infield. He turns potential hits into straightforward outs.
But this can't have been the plan, can it?
Fitzgerald's bat will have to be his X-factor, and he's just getting some early swings in down at Buffalo, so he's still got some work to do to impress the Blue Jays enough to get a call back up.
When you watch him field, though, it's clear why the Blue Jays wanted him. The glove is MLB-caliber, for sure.
