The St. John Lady Eagles won their second consecutive District 8-1A softball championship, defeating Ascension Catholic 7-6 and East Iberville 17-0. They are now preparing for the Division IV Select Playoffs with hopes of reaching the state tournament in Sulphur on May 1 and 2.
The St. John Lady Eagles, who clinched their second consecutive District 8-1A championship last week, have their sights on a much bigger goal.
St. John has faced competition from bigger schools in a Select-Class tournament as preparation for what they could face in the upcoming Division IV Select Playoffs.
A 7-6 win over perennial rival Ascension Catholic and a 17-0 victory against East Iberville secured the district title.
It puts the Lady Eagles on a path they hope will lead them back to Sulphur for the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Fast Pitch 56 State Tournament on May 1 and 2.
The district title may provide a strong support of self-confidence for the Lady Eagles, but longtime head coach Cindy Prouty emphasized that it’s only the first stop on the road to Sulphur.
She hopes a tournament of LHSAA Select schools last weekend got the team in sync for the caliber of competition St. John will face if the Lady Eagles punch their ticket to Sulphur.

Against Central, the Wildcats rallied to a 6-0 lead before the Eagles chalked two runs in the top of the fifth.
Cinclare Landry had a double and drove in Neumann on an RBI for St. John, while Madelyn had had one hit and one run for the Lady Eagles.
In 7-3 win over Teurlings Catholic, a four-run rally in the bottom of the sixth erased a Lady Eagle deficit for the win.
An Emily Purpera single drove in the tie-breaking run and Kirkland’s two-run double to center brough home Purpera.
It was the only win in four games against Class 5A teams in preparation for what the Eagles will face in Sulphur.
The team has already overcome a few odds.
“We competed well, and I’m hoping it prepares us for playoffs,” Prouty said. “After returning only four starters from last year, I think our team has done well.”
