Sean McVay wasnāt in the greatest mood on Day 1 of the 2026 NFL Draft, and it showed in his press conference after the Los Angeles Rams selected Ty Simpson 13th overall. It had many wondering whether he was on board with the pick, though heās said in countless interviews that it was unrelated to Simpson and heās excited about the rookie quarterback.
McVayās self-admitted āgrumpyā press conference garnered so much attention that he had to address it the next day and set the record straight. One person who says he didnāt see it is Simpson.
Simpson told Gary Klein of the LA Times on Saturday that he ādidnāt really see it.ā
What he does know is that McVay has been in touch and is excited to have him in Los Angeles.
āI know one thing though,ā he said. āI know coach McVay has been in contact and heās super fired up. And Iām super excited. I know that I couldnāt have asked for a better situation, not only with the best player in the league in front of me but the best coach in the league at the helm.ā
Chris Simms of NBC Sports was with McVay in London last week and he got some intel on what set the coach off on the first night of the draft. Simms says there was a ālittle argumentā before the presser, but that it was nothing major.
Whatever it was, McVay still hadnāt put it behind him by the time he and Les Snead fielded questions, and it showed. Thereās no chance the Rams wouldāve picked Simpson without McVayās approval, so this all seems to be much ado about nothing.
