UFC 328 adds lightweight teammates bout to undercard beneath Chimaev vs Strickland

Another lightweight fight has been added to UFC 328, bringing the total number of bouts on the card to 14.

The event, which will take place in Newark, New Jersey on May 9th, is headlined by a middleweight title fight between Khamzat Chimaev and Sean Strickland.

After Joshua Van pulled out of his scheduled UFC 327 title fight, his defense against Tatsuro Taira was shifted to the May 9 card and will now serve as the co-main event.

And now another notable bout has been announced, featuring two lightweight contenders who are also teammates.

Grant Dawson vs. Mateusz Rebecki set for UFC 328 Card

On Thursday, the promotion confirmed another addition to the UFC 328 lineup.

Mateusz Rebecki, coming off two consecutive defeats, will face Grant Dawson in a bout between two seasoned lightweights.

Dawson had put together three straight wins before suffering a knockout loss to Manel Torres in his most recent outing.

The main event features former teammates Chimaev and Strickland, both of whom spent time together at Xtreme Couture. A similar narrative runs through this matchup as well, with Dawson and Rebecki sharing time at American Top Team, where they’re expected to prepare alongside each other for this fight.

This isn’t new territory for Rebecki. Two fights ago, he faced Chris Duncan—a teammate who also happened to be his next-door neighbour in the gym’s dorms.

Dawson is now 14 fights into his UFC career. At one point, there was talk of him being a dark horse in the lightweight division.
