It’s not like Uli Hoeneß to hold his tongue when he’s asked questions by the press, but the former Bayern Munich president didn’t really want to give away any specific details when he was asked about the contract and future of board member for sport Max Eberl. The former RB Leipzig and Borussia Mönchengladbach man’s contract at Bayern currently runs through June 2027 having joined the club in March of 2024 after leaving his role at Leipzig.
Speaking on the matter of Eberl’s future and potential contract extension, Hoeneß kept his response as diplomatic and discrete as possible. “We have established the following principle: Firstly, it’s important to understand that board member contracts cannot be extended more than one year before their expiration. This also applies to Jan [Christian] Dreesen. The next supervisory board meeting will take place in around two weeks. This topic will first be raised there, as discussions can only begin from July 1st at the earliest. We shouldn’t preempt that,” he told DAZN (via @iMiaSanMia).
For the time being, finishing the season strong will be the primary focus for Bayern, but there are definitely big decisions to be made during their important supervisory board meeting. Opinions have been swirling around as to whether or not Eberl will be offered a one-year extension, as there are a lot of things to consider.
From the minute he assumed his role as board member for sport, he was immediately tasked with tall orders of trying to reduce the overall wage bill at the club, aiding in the search for Thomas Tuchel’s replacement, squad planning, and negotiating key contracts. Getting new deals for , , and were spearheaded by Eberl and likewise this year’s expensive extension of — not exactly helping in lowering the squad’s overall wage bill.
As far as the way the team is playing on the pitch, it’s hard to complain, but front office positions are fluid and forward thinking, constantly. Missing out on and landing Luis Díaz has turned out to be a huge benefit for Bayern, at least in the short term, but transfer miracles like that don’t happen every window. The real question will be, does Bayern’s hierarchy have the faith that Eberl can keep the proverbial ball moving in the right direction?
