UNC football will wear 1980 throwback jerseys during the 2026 season to celebrate Kenan Stadium's 100th anniversary. The jerseys commemorate the 1980 ACC championship team, which included notable players like Lawrence Taylor.
UNC football will wear throwback jerseys in 2026 to celebrate the 100th season of Kenan Stadium, the university announced Wednesday, May 13.
Bill Belichick’s Tar Heels will rock uniforms from the 1980 ACC championship season, which finished with UNC logging an 11-1 record as a top-10 team. Lawrence Taylor, Amos Lawrence and Donnell Thompson were among the players on that squad.
The 1980 jerseys featured a UNC stairstep logo that Belichick wore on shirts throughout his debut season with the Tar Heels in 2025. The program hasn’t revealed the game in which it will rock its throwback uniforms.
Former UNC players will be honored during the six-game home schedule, including honorary captains, in-game recognitions and participating in the Old Well Walk that returned to gamedays last season. The program said “plans are in place” to feature UNC’s five retired jerseys and highlight the honored jerseys around the stadium.
"We are excited to recognize 100 seasons of Kenan Stadium by honoring the program's alumni, elevating the fan experience from pregame to postgame and enhancing our historic facility,” UNC incoming athletics director Steve Newmark said in a school-issued statement.
“As we cheer on the 2026 Tar Heels, we will also commemorate the past while continuing to build toward the future."
UNC will debut a 100th season logo, which will be available on merchandise during the season. The Tar Heels also plan to upgrade their sound system, two videoboards and add nine ribbon boards around the full seating bowl of the 50,000-seat stadium. The press box is also undergoing a renovation.
In addition to in-stadium improvements, UNC will continue its pregame concert series. A full schedule of performers will be “announced soon,” according to the university.
Kenan Stadium opened in 1927 and has hosted 551 UNC football games, with the Tar Heels logging a 328-207-16 record. UNC hosts East Tennessee State, Notre Dame, Syracuse, Miami, Louisville and N.C. State in Belichick’s second season.
The specific game in which UNC football will wear the 1980 throwback jerseys has not yet been revealed.
Key players on the 1980 UNC football team included Lawrence Taylor, Amos Lawrence, and Donnell Thompson.
Plans include honoring former players, featuring retired jerseys, and celebrating with in-game recognitions during the six-game home schedule.
