Five-star point guard Dylan Mingo has parted ways with North Carolina after initially committing in February. The decision follows the hiring of new head coach Michael Malone and a shift in the team's backcourt strategy.
Mingo, a consensus top-10 prospect in his class out of Long Island Lutheran (N.Y.), committed to UNC on Feb. 17 but never signed a national letter of intent. The move comes less than a month after former head coach Hubert Davis was fired on March 24 and replaced by former NBA championship-winning coach Michael Malone. Mingo met with Malone and members of the new staff over the weekend.
Mingo played in 12 games last spring for the PSA Cardinals on the Nike EYBL circuit, averaging 19.3 points, 7.8 rebounds, 2.6 assists and 2.3 steals. He shot 76% from the free-throw line, 48.1% on two-point attempts and 25.6% from 3-point range.
He picked the Tar Heels over finalists Baylor, Penn State and Washington, and also held offers from Alabama, Cincinnati, Florida State, Illinois, Louisville, Missouri, N.C. State, Ole Miss, Texas and UConn.
North Carolinaâs 2026 recruiting haul still includes four-star forward and McDonaldâs All American Maximo Adams, along with three-star guard Malloy Smith. Adams said Saturday he intends to honor his pledge to the Tar Heels.
