Tottenham Hotspur has played in England's top-flight soccer league for 48 straight seasons. And with four matches remaining in the Premier League season, Spurs are in real danger of seeing that run come to an end.
You best believe that U.S. men's national team coach Mauricio Pochettino has taken notice.
Pochettino was the manager in North London for six seasons before he was ousted in 2019 to be replaced by José Mourinho. And though Pochettino has had several coaching stops since his time with Spurs, he expressed real sadness over the prospect of the club being relegated to the second-tier EFL Championship.
Pochettino said over Spurs' struggles, via The Athletic:
“It is really sad. I really love Tottenham; it’s one of the most important parts of my life as a coach and in my personal life too. I can talk from my experience in Tottenham and what I can tell you for me it’s one of the biggest clubs in the world.
“Tottenham is a massive club with a massive following.”
Pochettino's contract with the USMNT runs through the upcoming World Cup in the U.S., Canada and Mexico. After the tournament, he will almost definitely look for opportunities at the club level and expressed desire to return to the Premier League.
“One day, yes because I really like England,” he replied, when asked if he wants to return to the Premier League. “I think my human profile and coach profile match very well with the Premier League and with the culture, the idea, the idiosyncrasy, and the philosophy.”
