Eli Willits shines despite Fredericksburg Nationals' loss to Mudcats
The Ames Tribune is inviting readers to vote for the female Athlete of the Week for April 26-May 2, highlighting standout performances from local high school spring sports. Notable achievements include soccer victories for Ames and Gilbert.
The week of April 26-May 2 was full of female high school spring sports action featuring teams and athletes from the Ames area.
Gilbert and Collins-Maxwell both hosted co-ed track meets during the week. Area girls golf teams were active during the week, and area girls soccer games featured Class 3A No. 14 Ames blanking Des Moines Lincoln (2-0) and Hoover (11-0) and 2A No. 11 Gilbert scoring a 5-0 rivalry win over Nevada.
Several female athletes from the Ames area stood out during the week.

Mueller scored multiple goals in two games for the Class 2A No. 11 Gilbert girls soccer team during the week.
Mueller netted two goals during the Tigers' 5-0 win over rival Nevada on April 30 at Gilbert. She tallied two goals and one assist in a 4-0 victory at Mason City on May 1.
Deardorff anchored Ames to victory in the 4x200-meter relay and she placed second individually in the open 200 during the Wildcat Relays girls track and field meet on April 30 at Carlisle.
Deardorff helped the Little Cyclone 4x200 win with a time of one minute, 48.77 seconds. She finished the open 200 in 26.72.
Carlson earned medalist honors for the Roland-Story girls golf team at the Norsemen Invitational on April 30 at the River Bend Golf Course in Story City.
The nominees include several standout female athletes from the Ames area, with Raya Mueller from Gilbert being mentioned specifically.
The week featured co-ed track meets, active girls golf teams, and soccer games, including significant wins for Ames and Gilbert.
Readers can vote for the Athlete of the Week on the Ames Tribune website, with the winner announced at the end of the week.
Ames defeated Des Moines Lincoln 2-0 and Hoover 11-0, while Gilbert won against Nevada 5-0.

Carlson carded a 7-over round of 79 during the 18-hole competition. She won medalist honors by six strokes and helped the Norse roll to the team championship by an incredible 64 strokes.
Kinzenbaw was part of three victorious events for the Ballard girls track and field team during the Prairie City-Monroe Invitational on April 27 at Monroe.
Kinzenbaw won the high jump with a jump of four feet, 10 inches and the open 200 in 28.91 seconds. She also ran the second leg on Ballard's victorious 4x400 relay team that finished in 4:19.44.
Gruhn helped the Nevada girls soccer team knock off Perry by a 3-2 score on April 27 at Perry.
Gruhn had a strong game at keeper for the Cubs, finishing with seven saves. She also gave a gutsy effort despite facing constant pressure during Nevada's 5-0 loss at 2A No. 11 Gilbert on April 30.
