Eli Willits shines despite Fredericksburg Nationals' loss to Mudcats
The Ames Tribune is hosting a vote for the male Athlete of the Week for April 26-May 2, highlighting local high school sports achievements. Nominees include athletes from soccer, golf, and tennis competitions.
The week of April 26-May 2 was another exciting week of spring sports competition for male high school athletes from the Ames area.
Gilbert hosted the Bengal Relays co-ed track meet and Collins-Maxwell hosted the Spartan Relays during the week. The Class 2A No. 1 Gilbert boys soccer team defeated Nevada in a 2-1 battle at Nevada and Ames upset Class 3A No. 3 Des Moines Hoover, also winning by a 2-1 score.
There were also exciting boys golf and tennis meets featuring area teams during the week.
Here are the Ames Tribune male Athlete of the Week nominees for the week of April 26-May 2. AmesTrib.com readers vote to determine the winner, who will be announced at the end of the week.

Jones scored the winning goal for the Ames boys soccer team during its 2-1 upset victory over Class 3A No. 3 Des Moines Hoover on May 1 at Ames.
Jones netted the goal with 13 minutes left in the second half. It was just his second goal of the season.
Oswalt won three individual events for the Collins-Maxwell boys track and field team during the Spartan Relays on April 30 at Maxwell.
Oswalt won the 100-meter dash in 11.61 seconds, the 200 in 23.64 and the open 400 in 52.45. He also ran the third leg on the Spartans' victorious sprint medley relay team that finished in 1:42.12.
Rodgers placed second at the Oskaloosa Invitational boys golf meet on April 28 at the Edmundson Golf Course in Oskaloosa.
Rodgers carded an even par round of 70 over 18 holes. He finished just one stroke behind the winning score of 69 by Pella's Kyler Besick.
The nominees include Logan Jones from Ames and other athletes from local soccer, golf, and tennis competitions.
Key events included the Bengal Relays, Spartan Relays, and soccer matches where Gilbert defeated Nevada and Ames upset Des Moines Hoover.
Readers can vote for the Athlete of the Week on the Ames Tribune website, with the winner announced at the end of the week.

Ersland picked up two victories in No. 1 singles matches for the Ballard boys tennis team during the week.
Ersland defeated Norwalk's Wyatt Coburn in straight sets, 6-4 and 7-5, during the Bombers' 6-5 loss to the Warriors on April 27 at Norwalk. He took down Boone's Braxtan Sproule by scores of 6-0 and 6-3 during the Bombers' 7-4 loss to the Toreadors on April 28 at Boone.
Squiers helped the Gilbert boys track and field team win two relays at the Bengal Relays on April 29 at Gilbert.
Squiers ran the second leg on the Tigers' 4x400 relay team that won in 3:33.38. He anchored Gilbert to victory in the 4x800 with a time of 8:04.20.
