As postseason competition nears for spring sports, here are 10 candidates for Guthrie Athlete of the Week for events of May 2-8, 2026.
Nominees are from the coverage areas of the Binghamton Press & Sun-Bulletin, Elmira Star-Gazette, Ithaca Journal and Corning Leader. They are based primarily on submitted results.

This week's nominees:
Ronin Ault, Waverly baseball: Ault had three consecutive 3-for-4 games, including homers in victories over Owego and Oneonta. He had a combined 10 RBIs over the three contests and followed with a homer and 2 RBIs in another win over Owego. Ault tossed six 3-hit innings in one victory over Owego, allowing one earned run.
Hannah Carpenter, Waverly softball: Carpenter went 4-for-5 with 2 homers, a double, 3 runs, and 8 RBIs in a victory over Owego.
Jackson Cavalier, Elmira baseball: Cavalier's week started with a 4-hit shutout in a win over Corning. He then went 3-for-4 with a homer and 4 RBIs in a victory over the Hawks before doubling and scoring 2 runs as Elmira completed a three-game weekly sweep of Corning.
Marley Devlin, Elmira girls flag football: Devlin completed 14 of 26 passes for 178 yards and 4 touchdowns in a victory over Ithaca. She then completed 11 of 20 passes for 141 yards and a TD to go with 15 rushes for 105 yards and 2 TDs in a win over Corning.
Erin Gowe, Vestal softball: Gowe struck out 16 in pitching a two-hitter in a win over Maine-Endwell. That followed a 5-hitter in a 4-3 victory over Webster Schroeder in which Gowe struck out 7 batters.
Matti Johnston, Corning softball: Johnston struck out 13 in pitching a five-inning 2-hitter in a win over Binghamton that clinched the STAC West title. She went 2-for-3 with a homer, 3 runs, and 4 RBIs in the triumph. Johnston then went 3-for-3 with 2 triples and 3 RBIs in a win over Union-Endicott while pitching a five-inning 1-hitter with 12 strikeouts.
Lexi Lese, Horseheads girls lacrosse: Lese had 8 goals and 2 assists in a win over Elmira, followed by 2 goals and 2 assists in a victory against Corning.
Makenzie Lombardini, Chenango Valley/Johnson City girls lacrosse: Lombardini registered 6 goals and 2 assists in a victory over Whitney Point.
Tyson Schmitt, Windsor baseball: Schmitt struck out 10 and pitched a 1-hit shutout in a victory over Binghamton. He went 3-for-5 with a triple and 4 RBIs in a win against Chenango Forks, and went 1-for-2 with 2 runs and an RBI in a victory over Johnson City.
Finn Schweizer, Elmira Notre Dame/Watkins Glen boys lacrosse: Schweizer had 7 goals and an assist in a 15-10 victory over Windsor. Earlier in the week, he had 6 goals and an assist in a victory over Marcus Whitman.
