Golden State Warriors champion Draymond Green backs head coach Steve Kerr amid speculation on his future with the team.
In a recent appearance on ESPN's NBA Today, Green said that Kerr has earned the right to leave the helm whenever he is ready.
"Steph doesn't want another coach. Nobody wants that," Green emphasized. "We won 4 championships under coach Kerr. If he stops today he's a hall of fame coach. As long as we have a Steve Kerr wanting to coach this team you're not gonna go and find a better coach. That's not a worry of mine or anybody in this organization."
Steve Kerrâs Legacy Remains Strong
Kerr is in the final year of his deal. His tenure as the Warriors' head coach could come to an end as soon as Wednesday. The Warriors are set to enter the play-in as the No. 10 seed to take on the No. 9 seed Los Angeles Clippers.
Entering the season, the Warriors had championship aspirations; however, injuries to top players like Stephen Curry and Jimmy Butler derailed Golden State's season.
Kerr is responsible for guiding the Warriors to new heights. At the helm, he's guided the Warriors to a 604-353 record, which is good for a win percentage of 63 percent. He's taken the Warriors to six NBA Finals, winning four of them, including five consecutive appearances.
However, the past four years have been rough. Golden State has failed to make it past the second round in that span and finished with a below .500 record this season for the first time since 2019-20.
Kerr is in his 12th season at the helm. Although this season didn't go according to plan, there is zero indication it will be his last.
"Kerr and general manager Mike Dunleavy have been consistent all season: theyâll address the future after it ends," Nick Friedell of The Athletic wrote. "Thereâs been no indication of a split. A team source reiterated recently that nothing has changed and that all sides will communicate openly when the season concludes. Kerr signed a two-year, $35 million extension in 2024 that ends after this season."
