The two runs marked the first runs allowed by Griffin in the opening frame all season.

With runners on the corners in the fifth inning, CJ Abrams grounded into a double play to end the inning. Griffin followed it up with three strikeouts in the bottom of the inning, yet the Nationals would threaten again in the seventh inning with Nasim Nunez on third before a James Wood strikeout and Brady House grounder ended the threat.
Yet Washington would be able to keep Miami quiet the rest of the night after Brad Lord allowed two hits and tossed a pair of strikeouts over 1.2 innings, but a throwing error by Abrams kept the Marlins alive with a runner on first with two outs. PJ Poulin replaced Lord and walked his first batter before striking out the final batter for the win.
