As the Washington Huskies prepare to open up the NCAA Tournament against the South Florida Bulls on Friday, coach Heather Tarr is going to need someone at the bottom of her lineup to step up and get on base consistently to set things up for her big hitters at the top.
After a strong postseason performance, which earned her a spot on the All-Big Ten Tournament Team, that person could be right fielder Sophi Mazzola. Over two games in College Park, Maryland, the sophomore from Eureka, Missouri, went 2-for-4 with a walk and showcased her athleticism on both sides of the ball, with a bunt single and some strong defense in the outfield.
The Huskies will need all the threats on the bases that they can get in the Fayetteville Regional, and Mazzola, who tied for the team lead with 6 stolen bases in 7 attempts this season after swiping 13 bags during her freshman year, is a dynamic option to put pressure on the defense. With All-Big Ten Freshman Team honoree Kaycie Burdick and All-Big Ten First Teamers Alexis DeBoer and Giselle Alvarez occupying the top of the order, if Mazzola gets on, the Huskies are a threat to score quickly.
Although her power numbers dipped from the 2025 season, hitting just 3 home runs after 8 long balls as a freshman, Mazzola put together a strong second year on Montlake. She posted a .318 batting average on 34 hits, including 9 doubles and a triple, 20 runs batted in, 11 walks, and a .930 OPS while anchoring the bottom of the order.
As the Huskies look to make it back to the Women's College World Series for the first time since 2023, Mazzola could prove to be a major sparkplug in a young, yet talented UW lineup.
The Huskies will face off with South Florida on Friday, May 15, at 5:00 p.m. PT.
