In this week's Wooster Daily Record's baseball power rankings, the top teams continued maintaining their level, as one team suffers a heartbreaking loss.
(Note: Results and win-loss records are through Sunday.)
Norwayne gained a little bit of ground in the Wayne County Athletic League standings (in third place) last week, as Smithville stays just ahead of the Bobcats, even after a 1-3 week. Chippewa's solid play continues as the Chipps split with Hillsdale and are fourth in the WCAL. Chippewa and Norwayne will meet this week in a two-game set between teams situated right in the middle of the WCAL standings. Hillsdale is another team trying to stay within distance of league-leading Waynedale, as the Falcons sit second and are 2½ games back.
Tuslaw second baseman Luke Betz fires over to first baseman Landon Gannet. Tuslaw lost to Hillsdale 4-0 in the Carmichael Classic Saturday.
The top three teams in the Principals Athletic Conference and intriguing enough, are the only three teams in the seven-team league that have a winning record in league play. Triway sits in first place in the PAC (7-1 league record) after taking two games from Tuslaw last week (2-1, 8-2) and have won seven in a row. Tuslaw had an 0-3 week − two losses to Triway and were shutout by Hillsdale 4-0 − and are sitting in third (4-2 league record) in the PAC behind Orrville (5-1 league record). Orrville went 3-1 last week, with the Red Riders loss being to Waynedale 4-0.
Orrville and Triway split their two games, while Tuslaw and Orrville have yet to meet this season. It looks like it will be these three hunting each other down for the league title with about two weeks of regular season play to go.
At this moment, we're pretty sure baseball is the last thing on the minds of Wooster's baseball team, Wooster High School and the city right now after sophomore baseball player Maddox Graser passed away over the weekend. The last time Wooster played was last Tuesday, April 21, in their 10-0 home win over West Homes in a game where Graser had two RBI. The Generals haven't played since and it's not known as of right now when or if they will return to playing baseball this season.
The No. 1 ranked team in Division VI by MaxPreps, have won five in a row since their defeat to Waynedale about over a week ago. The Hawks lead the Inter Valley South Conference and have two key nonconference tests this week against Triway and Alliance.
Still at No. 1 in the power rankings is the No. 2 ranked Division V team in Waynedale, who have now won six in a row but have pulled off three straight shutouts (9-0, 4-0, 4-0), as the Golden Bears got productive performances and wins out of Jordan Miller, Cameron Miller and Logan Troyer.
