The North Carolina Tar Heels made headlines on Monday when the program shockingly cut ties with a five-star recruit two months after his verbal commitment to UNC.
“North Carolina has decided to move away from Dylan Mingo,” TarHeel247’s Andrew Jones reported.
“Mingo committed to UNC this spring but had not signed a letter of intent. The No. 8 overall prospect in the class, Mingo, a 6-foot-5 combo guard, originally committed to UNC under former coach Hubert Davis on Feb. 17.”
On a recent episode of the Eye on College Basketball podcast, CBS Sports’ Matt Norlander revealed the real reason why Mingo won’t be joining Michael Malone and the Tar Heels.
“I was told Dylan Mingo actually got hurt again in March,” Norlander said Wednesday. “They were probably going to need to redshirt him next season. He has since decommitted. They’re in the midst of trying to land some other fairly big names as well.”
It goes without saying that redshirting a highly-regarded high school recruit viewed as a valuable win-now piece for Michael Malone’s crew wouldn’t have been ideal for the program. As much as the Tar Heels likely wanted Mingo to join the fold following his senior season at Long Island Lutheran, it’s no longer a logical plan considering his troubling injury status.
Malone and the Tar Heels will have no choice but to pivot to other targets after removing Mingo from the equation.
