Cherie DeVaux's win at the 2026 Kentucky Derby marked the first time a female American thoroughbred racehorse trainer took the title, but there were several people involved in Golden Tempo's historic May 2 victory, from the owners who raised him to his jockey on race day.
From his 2026 Derby race alone, Golden Tempo earned $3.1 million, or 62%, of a $5 million purse, one of the biggest prizes in all of horse racing. The top five finishers also earned a hefty share of prize money, with second place horse, Renegade, taking home $1 million, and the third place horse, Ocelli, winning $500,000. But how much did each member of Golden Tempo's team take home? The Courier Journal has crunched the numbers.
Golden Tempo is owned by a partnership between St. Elias Stable and Phipps Stable, who will share their portion of the $3.1 million. Horsemen told The Courier Journal each owner distributes an agreed upon portion of the allotted prize money to the trainer and jockey. The owner is usually left with 80%, which comes out to $2.48 million between the two stables.
DeVaux and her team earned a sizable share of Golden Tempo's prize money. The trainer's share is typically around 10%, meaning she would have come away with $310,000, horsemen told The Courier Journal.
DeVaux began her career as an exercise rider just around 20 years ago before entering the thoroughbred training world. She attributes her career path to late trainer Chuck Simon, who "begrudgingly" took her under his wing as an assistant trainer, according to kentuckyderby.com.
Individuals in horse racing who spoke with The Courier Journal said jockeys often take home 10% of the prize money, which is equivalent to $310,000 in 2026. Jockey agents and others on the team are also entitled to a share, further dividing up the fund.
Golden Tempo's rider, Josรฉ Ortiz, won his first Derby in 2026 after participating in the race 11 times, nine of which were in competition with his older brother, Irad Ortiz Jr. Hailing from a family of jockeys, the Puerto Rican riders are now two of the most successful in thoroughbred racing, according to Keeneland, an equine business based in Lexington.
According to a May 6 statement, Golden Tempo will bypass the Preakness Stakes May 16, leaving him without the second title on American horse racing's Triple Crown. DeVaux emphasized the importance of Golden Tempo's health in her ultimate decision.
"Golden gave us the race of a lifetime in the Kentucky Derby, and we believe the best decision for him moving forward is to give him a little more time following such a tremendous effort," she wrote. "His health, happiness, and long-term future will always remain our top priority."
DeVaux added that the Belmont Stakes could be in Golden Tempo's future, which would give him the opportunity to earn two of the three titles required for the Triple Crown, something last year's Kentucky Derby winner, Sovereignty, was able to achieve.
