Monroe Freeling's Joyful Draft Call with the Panthers
The Tampa Bay Buccaneers selected Miami edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr. with the 15th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, earning an A+ grade for his potential impact on the team.
With the 15th overall pick in the 2026 NFL Draft, Tampa Bay selected Miami edge rusher Rueben Bain Jr., taking full advantage of one of the more surprising slides of the night. Bain, ranked No. 7 overall on Daniel Jeremiah’s final big board, was widely expected to go much earlier. Instead, he fell right into the Bucs’ lap.
Grade: A+ (and honestly, you’d add another plus if you could)
The Buccaneers have been searching for a true, blue-chip edge rusher. Someone who can consistently win, set the edge, and bring a physical presence snap after snap. Bain checks those boxes in a big way. His 2025 production backs it up. Bain finished with 52 total tackles, 14.5 tackles for loss, and 9.5 sacks, constantly living in the backfield and forcing offenses to account for him on every down. He was disruptive even beyond the box score, generating pressure and affecting quarterbacks with his effort and timing.
There will be nitpicks in his evaluation, most notably his “short arms,” which some teams viewed as a limitation in terms of length at the position. But Bain has already shown that it doesn’t hold him back. His relentless motor, natural bend around the edge, and ability to win with leverage and technique allowed him to produce at a high level against top competition.
And that play style fits perfectly in Todd Bowles’ defense. Bain brings the kind of energy and physicality this front has been missing. He can set a firm edge in the run game, then turn around and pin his ears back as a pass rusher. More importantly, he’s the type of player offenses have to game plan for, something Tampa Bay hasn’t consistently had off the edge in recent years, and something Bain forced opponents to do every Saturday.
Bucs get their marquee pass rusher, Yaya Diaby gets his first real running partner, and Jason Licht gets his guy. There is not much more you could ask for out of this team if you are a fan.
