What Illinois’ matchup vs. Duke says about Illini’s non-conference slate

Brad Underwood continues to schedule aggressively for the Illini, and the latest marquee matchup announced is a home-and-home series with the Duke Blue Devils. Illinois will travel to Durham for the first game of the series on Nov. 17, while Duke will make the return trip to Champaign on Dec. 4, 2027.

The Illini are now set to face Duke, Texas Tech, Missouri, UConn and likely Houston and North Carolina in a loaded non-conference slate. Once again, Illinois is putting together one of the toughest non-conference schedules in the country.

Duke has reached back-to-back Elite Eights and is expected to be one of the top teams in the nation again this season. The Blue Devils currently rank No. 1 in Bart Torvik’s preseason ratings for the 2026-27 season.

Although Duke will lose projected top-five NBA Draft pick Cameron Boozer, the Blue Devils are expected to return key contributors such as Cayden Boozer, Caleb Foster, Patrick Ngongba and Dame Sarr. They also landed one of the top transfers on the market in John Blackwell.

The showdown inside Cameron Indoor Stadium should be one of the premier games of the season. It also marks the second time in the last three seasons that Duke and Illinois will meet in non-conference play. The Blue Devils dominated the Illini at Madison Square Garden during the 2024-25 season, but Illinois will now have two more opportunities to get revenge.

Illinois is just 3-6 all-time against Duke, with its last victory coming during the 2020-21 season when the Illini earned an 83-68 win inside Cameron Indoor. This matchup should serve as one of the biggest tests of the season for an Illinois team with Final Four aspirations.
