The veteran forward remains one of the most important pieces in Golden State’s plans, but timing has become the defining factor in how his situation will unfold.
With injury recovery now at the center of everything, the conversation around his next contract is being pushed further down the line.
And that delay is not accidental. It reflects both his current circumstances and the franchise’s broader approach.

According to ESPN, the timeline of Butler’s future with the Warriors is already clear.
“Butler, meanwhile, who will be on the final season of an expiring $56.8 million deal, isn’t eligible for an extension until next February, which is around the time he could be returning from his ACL tear.
“There’s an expectation that he will focus on rehabbing, rediscovering his form and then sorting out his NBA future the following summer,” ESPN reported.
That approach places recovery ahead of negotiations, ensuring that any long-term decision is made only after he proves he can return to his previous level.

It also aligns with how teams typically handle major injuries, especially for players nearing the later stages of their careers.
Before his season-ending ACL injury in January, Butler had already established himself as a central figure in Golden State’s system.
He averaged 20 points, 5.6 rebounds, and 4.9 assists across 38 games while shooting over 50 percent from the field, providing both scoring and playmaking alongside Stephen Curry.
The difference in team performance was even more telling. The Warriors went 23-15 with Butler in the lineup compared to 14-30 without him, underlining his overall impact on both ends of the floor.
That is exactly why the organization is willing to wait. Butler is not just another piece; he is a defining one when healthy.
For now, everything comes back to recovery. Because until Butler proves he is fully back, the contract conversation will remain exactly where it is supposed to be, on hold.
