Rory McIlroy will not be playing in the fifth Signature Event of the PGA Tour season next week at the Cadillac Championship.
McIlroy missed out on the fourth Signature Event of 2026 at the RBC Heritage as well.
The Masters champion is clearly tailoring his schedule around peaking for the majors now.
Rory McIlroy has achieved more than most during his time in the game, with 30 PGA Tour wins to his name, including six major championships.
As a result of his standing in the game, he is free to pick and choose when he plays.

McIlroy has caused the PGA Tour a big problem by not committing to playing in certain Signature Events.
The whole point in creating the designated events was to ensure that the best players on the PGA Tour competed against each other more regularly.
As a result, sponsors have started to commit even more money to the Tour.
McIlroy caused somewhat of a stir this weekend when it was announced that he would not be playing in the Cadillac Championship at Trump National Doral.
In fairness, he was not the only top player who didn’t commit to the tournament, with the likes of Ludvig Aberg, Xander Schauffele, Robert MacIntyre and Matt Fitzpatrick choosing to miss the event.
However, if McIlroy stood by what he said three years ago, he would be teeing it up in Miami next week.

Ahead of the Genesis Invitational in 2023, McIlroy responded when asked what he believes the Signature Events should be all about.
“The best players should be playing in them,“ McIlroy insisted.
“Ultimately, the PGA Tour needs to be built around the best players, because that is what will maximize the value of the product.“
Those comments obviously seem absolutely meaningless now.
McIlroy missed three Signature Events in 2025, and he will only have played three out of the first five by the time the Cadillac Championship rolls around.
The Northern Irishman can’t be blamed for doing what he thinks is right for his career.
PGA Tour golfers are independent contractors and McIlroy is not obligated to play in any tournaments that he doesn’t want to.
Perhaps the onus is on the PGA Tour to change the rules so that it becomes mandatory for players to enter at least six Signature Events per season.
But how on earth would they enforce that? Fining McIlroy would be a futile exercise and they certainly couldn’t ban him from playing other Signature Events – that would just be a counterproductive exercise.
The truth of the matter is that the PGA Tour are actually powerless to stop Rory McIlroy from skipping Signature Events.
And that in itself proves that the model doesn’t actually work.
