This is especially true right now with each program having hired a new head coach in the past few offseasons. Pat Kelsey and Mark Pope were hired at Louisville and Kentucky, respectively, in 2024 while Darian DeVries was hired at Indiana in 2025. Of that trio, only Pope has a prior connection to his program as a former player for the Wildcats. With all of this in mind, we thought it’d be interested in checking in on how our neighbors to the south are doing lately, especially with Louisville appearing more frequently on Indiana’s schedule in recent years and Kentucky having a whole series mapped out with the next installment to be played in Indianapolis this December. All three are also experiencing heavy transfer portal traffic. Louisville seems to be having one of the best offseasons in the sport yet again, landing commitments from both Oregon transfer guard Jackson Shelstad and Kansas transfer forward Flory Bidunga, one of the top players available through the portal. Kelsey followed that up by landing transfer , one of the top prospects in the high school class of 2024. Kentucky, on the other hand, seems to be having difficulties. The Wildcats have been playing a (pun intended) game of cat and mouse with Tyran Stokes, the No. 1 overall player in the class of 2026 who remains uncommitted while also hosting the top transfer point guard, BYU’s Rob Wright, for a visit this past week. and Wright even announced he was returning to BYU not long after visiting Lexington. The Wildcats aren’t coming up empty handed though, with several visitors on deck, including . Indiana hasn’t exactly signed players with the pedigree of Bidunga, but the Hoosiers’ portal rebuild has been more fruitful than that of Kentucky up to this point. There’s still time for the Wildcats to land Stokes and put a team around him, but Pope could really use a PR win right now. The vibes are significantly better in Louisville right now of all three programs. These programs have grown used to productive offseasons in recent years, so it’ll be interesting to see how these moves carry over into the 2026-27 season.
