Alessio Milivojevic has been named the starting quarterback for Michigan State as they conclude spring practice. Head coach Pat Fitzgerald confirmed this during a recent media session, indicating stability at the quarterback position heading into fall camp.
A starting quarterback has been named for the Spartans as we near the end of spring practice.
While the Spartans are "fluid" at nearly every position besides a few, quarterback is not one of them. New Michigan State head coach Pat Fitzgerald met with the media on Tuesday for one of his final press conferences before spring practice wraps up later this week. As part of that media session he noted that a lot of position battles for starting spots will continue into fall camp, but one in particular that has been resolved is at quarterback.
"We are very fluid everywhere," Fitzgerald said (quote courtesy of Spartan Shadows' Emmett Matasovsky). "Alessio Milivojevic is our starting quarterback, we are good there. Rhys (Dakin) is our starting punter, we are good there. Jordan (Hall) is the starting MIKE."
The appointment of Milivojevic as the Spartans' starting quarterback comes as no surprise, but to my understanding, this was the first time Fitzgerald had made that official statement. It may have been mentioned at some point previously, but this exact quote made it clear that he'll be the starting quarterback heading into fall camp and most likely for the season-opener against Toledo in September.
Milivojevic appeared in nine games this past season, throwing for 1,267 yards and 10 touchdowns compared to only three interceptions. Additionally, he ran for 59 non-sack rushing yards and one score.
With the quarterback position locked down, the Spartans will now need to figure out who will be starting around him. As Fitzgerald said, that remains "fluid" and something we will need to monitor as we enter fall camp in a few months. But at least for now, we have a clear indication of who's QB1 leaving spring ball.
