Colts wide receiver Alec Pierce is undergoing ankle surgery that will sideline him for three months. The decision follows multiple medical opinions to address lingering pain from last season.
INDIANAPOLIS ā Alec Pierce labored through lingering ankle pain during his career-best receiving season a year ago ā one that earned him a four-year deal this offseason worth as much as $114 million. Once the ink was dry in mid-March, Colts general manager Chris Ballard gave his new No. 1 receiver his blessing to fully heal ā even if it might mean a multi-month recovery process.
Though Pierce initially told Ballard he could continue maintenance work with his injured ankle through 2026, too, both sides eventually came to the collective decision, following multiple medical opinions, that Pierce would have āclean-upā work done on that ankle, Ballard told reporters Monday.
The procedure will sideline the 25-year-old for three months, eliminating him from this weekās kickoff to Indianapolisā offseason workout program this week, Ballard said.

ā(Alec) dealt with (the injury) for a lot of the season. He kept dealing with some pain in his ankle, and then after the season, we talked about, āIs it good enough? Can we get through it another year?āā Ballard said Monday of his star receiver. āAnd right before, and then after we signed him, I asked him, and (Alec) said, āAhh, I can play through it again.ā
āBut I knew he was hurting at times last year, so finally after consulting with multiple doctors and him, he had a clean-up done.ā
Ballard said the Colts donāt expect any ālong-term limitationsā following the procedure.

āIt got to where he was having to maintenance it a lot last year with the pain and kinda fight through that, and so at the end of the day,Ā I said, āLook, you can play this this, but do you want to play with it? Or (should we) knock it out?āā Ballard said. āSo we decided to knock it out.ā
Pierce is coming off career-highs in receptions (47), targets (84) and yards (1,003) to go with six touchdowns while leading the NFL in yards-per-catch (21.3) for the second year running.
