Dallas Cowboys' second-round pick Luke Schoonmaker has struggled to meet expectations since being drafted in 2023. His performance has been overshadowed by undrafted free agent Brevyn Spann-Ford, who has surpassed him on the depth chart.
Why It's Now Or Never For Cowboys 'Draft Bust' Luke Schoonmaker
If you wanted to know the dangers of an NFL team reaching for a selection, look no further than the Dallas Cowboys and their second round pick in the 2023 NFL Draft, Luke Schoonmaker.
For most, the Cowboys took Schoonmaker a lot earlier than most expected, but given they needed a tight end, the franchise selected him, and his performances haven't lived up to his draft stock.
It should be said that Schoonmaker was drafted as a blocking tight end, not a pure receiving threat, but over his three seasons, he has underwhelmed. So much so that undrafted free agent Brevyn Spann-Ford has leapfrogged him on the depth chart.
If a game were played today, Schoonmaker is TE3.
Which is why this offseason and the year ahead are crucial for the former Michigan Wolverine. Especially if he wants to remain a Cowboy.

Entering the final year of his rookie contract, Schoonmaker is fighting against the tide to prove he's worthy of sticking around beyond 2026.
He has Spann-Ford to battle with in Oxnard, and with the Cowboys taking Michael Trigg and DJ Rogers as undrafted free agents, Schoonmaker is in a battle for his Dallas career over the coming months.
We've seen Mazi Smith be moved on, and if Schoonmaker doesn't show something tangible this season, he'll follow suit.
Granted, the future might already be set, but Schoonmaker, if he wants to extend his Dallas career - and avoid the tag of 'draft bust'' - has to put it together on the field in a way he hasn't managed to yet in his NFL career.

Luke Schoonmaker was drafted primarily as a blocking tight end, but his overall performance has not matched his draft position, leading to criticism.
Brevyn Spann-Ford, an undrafted free agent, has outperformed Schoonmaker, moving ahead of him on the Cowboys' depth chart.
'Draft bust' refers to a player who was selected high in the draft but fails to meet expectations, which applies to Schoonmaker given his lackluster performance since being picked.

Injuries in his first two offseasons saw him start behind the eight-ball, and his production reflected that. In his three seasons, Schoonmaker hasn't surpassed 241 yards, 27 receptions, and 2 TDs in any of them.
Plus, he's never played more than 35 percent of the offensive snaps in any season.
That isn't exactly worthy of sticking around, is it?
Of course, we don't truly know what Dallas wants for him, and inside the building, the coaching staff might be pleased with his output. However, Spann-Ford has already overtaken him on the depth chart, which might already end any thought of a second contract with the Cowboys.
It does feel like Schoonmaker is fighting against the tide in 2026, and if he can't produce to the level many expect him to, then there's a real chance he's let go in a similar way to Jalen Tolbert this season.
The 2026 season is the very definition of now or never for Schoonmaker.
