The Phillies fired manager Rob Thomson Tuesday, following the high-priced team’s dreadful 9-19 start. It was believed by many that Alex Cora, who was fired by the Red Sox this past weekend, would immediately slide into the Philadelphia managerial role due to his close ties with Phillies President of Baseball Operations Dave Dombrowski.
Reporter Bob Nightengale quickly silenced that speculation Tuesday morning as he wrote on X minutes later, “Alex Cora was offered the Philadelphia Phillies managerial job before Don Mattingly but declined. He has decided to spend time with his family.”
Mattingly has been named the Phillies interim manager. The former Yankees great has been with the Phillies organization since January of this year, serving as the team’s bench coach under Thomson.
Thomson stated, at least publicly, at the time of the Mattingly hire as bench coach that he was on board.
“Dave [Dombrowski] and I have been talking about hiring a guy like Donnie with that type of pedigree,” Thomson said at the time, according to MLB.com. “Because as great as our staff is, we don’t have that guy who’s been a star in the big leagues.”
Interestingly enough, Mattingly said in January that he did not have any aspirations to be a manager again.
“I don’t think I have the energy for that anymore,” Mattingly said, according to . “I feel like those days have passed me by. So I don’t have any aspirations to manage again.”

**Could Alex Cora still be the Phillies next manager?**Cora’s reason for not accepting the Phillies job at this time seems to be legit.
Cora was initially hired by Dombrowski in Boston in the fall of 2017, so the potential burnout factor is very real. The idea of him jumping from one intense baseball market to another in the span of a few days makes for one frenzied whirlwind.
Perhaps Cora waits things out a few weeks, or a few months and then tells Dombrowski that he is ready to return to the dugout.
Buster Olney recently said on his Baseball Tonight podcast that he wonders “if the Phillies would offer Cora an extension on top of what he’s already owed” by the Red Sox.
Red Sox reporter Rob Bradford joined Olney on his podcast that day and said Cora managing again this year would “have to be the right spot,” and that “the right spot is the Phillies.”
Also factoring into everything is Dombrowski’s own job security. The 69-year-old executive, who has been with the franchise since 2021, has assembled an aging and expensive team in Philly whose best position players (Bryce Harper, Kyle Schwarber, Trea Turner) are all on the wrong side of 30 and carry nine-figure deals. They have made the playoffs every season under his watch, but have consistently come up short in the postseason.
Phillies oddsThe Phillies and Mets are the only two teams in MLB this season that have not reached double-digit wins yet.
Philly is 9-19 on the season and has lost 11 of its last 12 games. The Phils were among the favorites to win the World Series at the start of the season with a +1600 price, but those odds have more than doubled as they are now +3250 at Fanatics Sportsbook.
They are currently +800 to win the NL East and +175 to make the playoffs.
