Wirtz admits he needs to âfeedâ world record signing more
Liverpoolâs late flourish against Palace carried the unmistakable imprint of Florian Wirtz, whose stoppage-time strike settled nerves and sealed a 3-1 win that could prove decisive in the race for Champions League football. Speaking after the match, as reported by the original source on Liverpoolfc.com, the German playmaker framed the result in blunt, purposeful terms.
âI think we needed these three points, especially at home,â Wirtz said. âSo, really happy that we keep them here.â
There was no glossing over the challenge Palace posed. Their direct approach and willingness to stretch the pitch forced Liverpool into a disciplined defensive display before quality told at the other end.
âWe knew before the game what was coming,â Wirtz explained. âThey play a lot of balls in behind, take not too much risk, just looking for deep runs, so I think we defended it quite well.â
That blend of tactical awareness and attacking execution defined Liverpoolâs performance. They absorbed pressure, trusted their structure, and waited for the moments that would tilt the game.

âFirst of all, I knew that Joey would throw the ball over me,â he said. âThen a good pass from Macca, and I had to take the risk to just hit it on target. I hit it quite well so Iâm happy about that. Sometimes you can feel it that itâs a good strike.â
That Kop-end goal was more than a flourish. It was a statement of control, a reminder that Liverpool possess the cutting edge required in tight contests. The timing of the strike, arriving just as Palace sensed an opening after pulling a goal back, underlined its importance.
Much of Liverpoolâs attacking promise revolved around the link-up between Wirtz and Isak. The striker, returning from injury, found the net and offered a focal point that had been missing in recent weeks.
âEspecially as a striker itâs always important to score goals so Iâm happy for him,â Wirtz said. âI hope itâs the start of many and he can keep going like this.â
Wirtz was clear about the dynamic required to unlock Isakâs potential. Service is everything.
âI think itâs also important for him that we feed him with balls because if heâs just there on top alone, then itâs hard for him to score goals. He needs the balls to score them and as you could see today, if he gets the chance, he normally scores.â
There is a growing understanding between the pair, one built on timing, movement and trust. If sustained, it could become a decisive factor in Liverpoolâs run-in.
With the victory over Palace, Liverpool strengthened their grip on a top-five position, opening a valuable gap with only four matches remaining. The significance of the result was not lost on Wirtz.
âIt is a massive three points today,â he said. âIt was clear for us that this game today is really important for the qualification for the Champions League. Itâs not done yet, we have a few more games, but a good step today.â
There was also praise for the defensive resilience that underpinned the win, particularly goalkeeper Freddie Woodman.
âHe was unbelievable today,â Wirtz added. âHe had two or three top saves so Iâm really happy for him. He saved us the points.â
In a season defined by fine margins, performances like this carry weight. Liverpool did not dominate throughout, nor did they cruise to victory. Instead, they showed the hallmarks of a side learning how to win when conditions are less than perfect.
Against Palace, it was the combination of structure, opportunism and individual brilliance that made the difference. At the heart of it all was Wirtz, orchestrating, finishing, and articulating a performance that could yet shape Liverpoolâs season.
