PGA Championship: Golf’s best thought Aronimink would be easy. They were wrong

Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin criticizes the NFL and Netflix for charging fans to access games. The NFL's streaming deals have made some matchups, including a Thanksgiving Eve game, available only behind paywalls.

These days, the NFL pawning off some of the most interesting matchups from its schedule is standard practice.
The league has allowed Amazon Prime to exclusively broadcast its Thursday night slate since 2022. Games on holidays or holiday-like days outside of Thanksgiving Day are a relatively new phenomenon in general. Still, after a few years of the NFL giving football fans over-the-air access to Christmas Day games, streaming giant Netflix began broadcasting Christmas games on its platform, and behind another cruel $8.99 paywall, in 2024.
This year, as the NFL continues to intrude on every inch of ground we give it in our lives, there will also be a Thanksgiving Eve game for the first time. (Does no one call that "Friendsgiving" anymore?) The matchup between the ever-popular Wisconsin cultural institution, the Green Bay Packers, and the fellow Super Bowl contender, the Los Angeles Rams, will, of course, be on Netflix. Predictably, it will not be readily accessible to fans unless they're willing to shell out a little extra money to the inevitable Netflix machine.
That fact bothers Wisconsin Senator Tammy Baldwin.

In response to the NFL and Netflix putting the Packers-Rams game behind a paywall, the Democratic politician released a statement lambasting both organizations for the decision. The crux of her argument? Local sports fans should be able to watch their beloved sports teams together without worrying about additional costs. Oh, and well, using the decision to promote her "For The Fans Act," a bill centered on guaranteeing that local fans always have a free option to watch their teams play, regardless of who is broadcasting any given individual game.

In 2024, Netflix will broadcast Christmas games and a Thanksgiving Eve matchup between the Green Bay Packers and the Los Angeles Rams.
The NFL has increasingly partnered with streaming services like Amazon Prime and Netflix, moving significant games behind paywalls.

That certainly sounds like something all of us football fans can agree on. Well, hopefully.
“As the cost of just about everything continues to rise, the NFL is once again asking Wisconsinites to spend their hard-earned money on another streaming service,” said Senator Baldwin. “Enough is enough. My For the Fans Act would stop this exact scenario and prevent Wisconsin families from being forced to pay for Netflix just to watch the Packers play this Thanksgiving.”
Baldwin knows what she's doing. Using her home state Packers as a conduit to try to sell a bill that should be reasonable to anyone invested in live sports is taking the easiest layup for decision-making rhetoric. It, of course, is likely dead on arrival whenever it's time to vote on it because of (gestures at everything), but the thought still counts!
That's not the world we live in, dearest readers. You'll occasionally pay an additional two cups of coffee's worth just to squeeze three hours of joy from one of your favorite pastimes for the foreseeable future, and you'll like it.
Wait, I guess that price is more like the equivalent of one cup now? Geez.
