Yankees shortstop Jose Caballero is open to playing multiple positions again as Anthony Volpe is expected to return soon. Caballero's reaction to Volpe's impending return was a smile and silence.
ARLINGTON, Texas ā Yankees shortstop Jose Caballero was approached by NJ.com and asked if heās been preparing to start playing all over the field again.
āWhy?ā he asked.
Assuming Caballero was playing dumb, he was told anyway that Anthony Volpe would be returning soon, maybe by Friday.
Hearing that, Caballero smiled and stared ahead without moving his head at all for about five seconds.
Breaking the silence, he responded with another smile and a little message:
āWeāll see when that happens. Weāll see.ā
Thatās exactly what manager Aaron Boone said before Wednesdayās 3-0 loss to the Rangers when he was asked if Volpe would be full-time starter again when he returns from offseason left labrum surgery.
Caballero definitely has made a case that he should remain the starter with his hitting, baserunning and defense playing shortstop for 30 of the Yankeesā first 31 games, 20 of them victories.
Also, the Yankees probably will be weighing what they think they can get out of Volpe, who had his worst season hitting and fielding last year.
The Yankees team total wins line is set at 95.5 regular season games on FanDuel. Our in-depth FanDuel Sportsbook review provides a guide on how to navigate their platform.
Yes, it appears the Yankees are at least pondering how theyāll handle this.
Jose Caballero smiled and remained silent for several seconds when informed about Anthony Volpe's expected return.

Caballero threw in another two cents after his post-game shower Wednesday.
āI was always a shortstop until the Rays started moving me around,ā he said. āI played short and second, then they put me in the outfield. I was willing to play anywhere then and Iāll play anywhere now. I just want to be in the lineup every day.
āBut if shortstop is the only open position, then I want it. I think any player would say the same thing.ā
Maybe, but hoping to stay at short, Caballero says he didnāt even keep the bigger outfielderās glove that he used last season with the Rays and Yankees.
āI used to have two gloves, but I donāt now,ā he said. āIf I need to, Iāll find one for the outfield.ā
Shortstop is Caballeroās best and probably only chance to be a regular, but like last season after the Yankees traded for him on July 31, there will be opportunities regardless. If Volpe reclaims shortstop, Caballero still could get a game a week at short, third base, second and left field.
He earned playing time hitting .266 and stealing 15 bags in 40 games with the Yankees, and heās done it again this year.
Here are his 2026 resume highlights:
āCabbie is a really good player,ā Boone said. āHe was such an important addition for us when we got him last year. He does so many things to help you win a game, one of those is being a pest sometimes.
āI feel like his defense, he made four or five plays in the Boston series that seemed kind of routine and were kind of sneaky, tough plays that he was able to make. Heās just a winning player.ā
Whether you go by traditional or advanced defensive stats, Caballeroās fielding this season is better than Volpeās 2025 and career numbers.
Hereās a sample:
āI donāt know whatās going to happen, but as long as in there and helping the team, Iām happy,ā Caballero said. āIām happy to win a game. Thatās what Iām trying to do, win baseball games, man.ā
Caballero got off to a slow start, hitting just .140 with six hits in 40 at-bats in his first 12 games. As he was slumping, he felt more and more out of sync.
Then he realized heād toned down his on-field antics that are loved by his team and often despised by others. Heās high energy. He loves using the pitch clock to his advantage by engaging right at the eight-seconds limit.
āI kind of lost my edge for a little bit,ā he said. āIt might have been the early struggles. If Iām playing with an edge, it makes me better. I have it back now.ā
Volpe played all seven innings of Somersetās rain-shortened 6-5 win over Portland on Wednesday, going 2-for-4 with two line-drive hits to left field.
That could be it for Volpe, who hit .303 in 34 plate appearances playing 10 rehab games in 16 days, six with Somerset and four with Triple-A Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.
The Yankees will decide during Thursdayās off day what to do with Volpe, who could be activated from the IL to start, platoon or be a reserve. They could even option Volpe, although that seems unlikely.
āHopefully heās back with us,ā Caballero said. āHeās healthy.ā
Whatever the Yankees do, someone probably will be disappointed. But they have to do what they think is best for the team.
āThe most important thing is the team is winning games,ā Caballero said. āWe have the best record in the American League, and thatās what I can take from this early season.
āIāve had some ups and downs, but Iāve contributed to a team thatās leading the league in wins. Thatās what weāre looking for. Thatās what weāre here for.ā
Weāll find out soon if the Yankees stick with whatās working at shortstop or pull a Marty McFly with Volpe.
āWhatever they do, I just want to be in there somewhere,ā Caballero said. āAnd again, Iāll be happy playing anywhere, but if thereās only one spot open for me, I want it.ā
