Wooster Daily Record Baseball Power Rankings - Waynedale in early top spot
Waynedale's Brandon Steiner in all smiles coming off the field after making a nice play from his shortstop position. The Bears beat the Titans 7-0 Saturday afternoon at Waynedale.
Baseball season is about a couple weeks in across Ohio, so let's get into this season's first power rankings edition and see what the Top 10 looks like.
While Dalton did defeat Chippewa twice, Chippewa and their overall 6-3 record gives them a spot ahead of Dalton. Given the success Hillsdale and Norwayne have had in recent seasons, it might be surprising to see them this low, but it's early. While Hillsdale were swept by Wayne County Athletic League leader Waynedale last week, Norwayne will get their shot against the Golden Bears for a two-game set this week.
6. Triway (4-2)
5. Orrville (6-0)
Last season's undefeated Principals Athletic Conference winners in Triway stand at 4-2 and 3-0 in the league so far. Orrville, who started the season at 2-4 in their first six games last season, are off to a 6-0 start through six games this season. In their six wins, Orrville hasn't allowed more than three runs in a game and have gotten solid pitching out of Caleb Hills and Cameron Kraft.
Orrville and Triway will meet up in a two-game set this week.
4. Tuslaw (7-1)
Speaking of another PAC team, Tuslaw has looked impressive with their 7-1 start. In taking two games from Tuscarawas Central Catholic on Saturday (21-4, 18-1), Landon Gannet drove in seven runs across those two games and is leading the Mustangs in hits (14) and RBIs (17).
3. Wooster (6-0)
Last season's Ohio Cardinal Conference winners have looked pretty comfortable on the baseball field through six games as the Generals have four shutouts and four games of scoring double-digit runs to their name. Wooster will play a two-game set against always solid Ashland in league play and then travel to Triway on Friday, April 17, for an all-Wooster matchup.
2. Hiland (5-2)
In three of its five wins, the OHSAA three-time defending state champions have won three one-run games (all 1-0), which have come from strong displays from Mike Miller and Logan Yoder.
1. Wayndeale (7-1)

Last year's OHSAA Division III state champions hold the No. 1 spot in the first power rankings edition and they haven't skipped a beat. Beating consistent league-contending Hillsdale twice and shutting out last year's PAC champions Triway 7-0 on Saturday have put the Golden Bears in a pretty good position so far. They have an important week ahead of them as they get Norwayne twice in WCAL play and will meet up with Hiland at home on Friday, April 17, in a game between two defending state champions in what just might be the biggest baseball matchup of the regular season in the Wayne/Holmes County area.
