MASSILLON ‒ The Tigers wrestling team has a new practice space.
A gift from the Paul and Carol David Foundation funded a 10,000-square-foot addition to the Massillon City School's Paul L. David Athletic Training Facility on the Washington High School campus that includes a wrestling practice space, restrooms/locker rooms and additional storage.
The project features a state-of-the-art wrestling room built between the indoor facility and the high school to connect the spaces.
Construction began last June and was ready for wrestlers at the start of this year - during the wrestling season. The new space is approximately 3,400 square feet. Beaver is the general contract. John Patrick Picard was the architect.
Discussions began in 2023 with school officials working with the David Foundation and Picard to see if the addition was feasible.

The new practice room is double the size of the old wrestling space, Assistant Athletic Director Brian Pachis said during a tour of the space. It is unclear what the former wrestling room will be used for.
The practice space will be outfitted with new mats set to arrive this summer, he added.
Besides the wrestling team, two outside wrestling organizations are using the space for practice, he added. Those groups are paying a rental fee.
"It's getting a lot of use," Pachis said. "Every day there are people in here."
In addition, a women's and men's restroom/locker room as well as a family restroom were added. The indoor facility does not have any restrooms or locker rooms, Pachis explained. Previously, anyone using the indoor facility had to use the high school restrooms.
If school was not in session or the gym not being used, there was no supervision. Pachis said there was never a problem but it could result in someone wandering the school or damaging property.

The locker rooms include a little more than 70 lockers and have showers and restroom facilities.
A storage area was also added for the indoor football field. Before the new storage space, most of the practice equipment was left on the football field.
Some of the equipment is rather large, Pachis noted. When the field was in use by different groups, the equipment had to be pushed out of the way and often was used as a "playground" by guests.
That space is waiting on a padded flooring that will protect the concrete floor, he added.
A new entrance and back exit are under construction. Work is expected to be completed this year.
The new entrance will serve as the main entrance for the indoor facility and will include a sizeable vestibule. The existing entrance area of the indoor facility will be repurposed but a final decision has not yet been made, he added.
The cost is unclear because it is a gift from the David Foundation, Superintendent Paul Salvino said.
"The Massillon City School District is truly humbled by the generous gifts from The Paul and Carol David Foundation," Salvino said.
"These additions and upgrades will directly benefit our students ensuring our tradition of excellence will continue. We recognize our facilities are second to none and look forward to the ultimate responsibility of being the caretakers of these same facilities that create Tiger tradition."

Pachis said several upgrades have been made at the indoor field, including new turf, new padding on the walls and the facility was painted.
Those upgrades also were funded by the David Foundation.
The netting in the facility is also expected to be replaced.
