Spoelstra: No need to penalize Ball any further

The New York Yankees announced a significant roster move just hours after a promotion, following a disappointing 7-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels. The team's performance has declined, with starting pitcher Ryan Weathers struggling and the offense going silent after a brief resurgence.

The New York Yankees saw some concerning trends grow worse in a 7-1 loss to the Los Angeles Angels on Tuesday.
After opening the season with a three-game sweep of the San Francisco Giants, the Yankees are now barely over .500. Starting pitcher Ryan Weathers saw his season ERA balloon after giving up five earned runs in five innings. And after snapping a five-game losing streak with an offensive onslaught on Monday, the teamâs bats went quiet once again.
âAs Paul Goldschmidt put it, there was ânot much action on the basesâ by the Yankees on Tuesday, a night after scoring 11 runs,â Pete Caldera wrote for NorthJersey.com. âFour batters into Ryan Weathersâ start, the Yankee lefty had already given up three consecutive homers â a barrage that stunned and agitated the just-arriving Yankee Stadium crowd.â

But even though the loss can be attributed to struggles by the starter and hitters, it seems the Yankees biggest concern is in the bullpen.
Though David Bednar and Fernando Cruz have been reliable, the Yankees have been shuffling the other spots in the relief corps. On Tuesday, that meant demoting Jake Bird back to the minors and calling up Yerry De los Santos as a replacement.
He entered the games against the Angels in relief and gave up three hits, an earned run and two walks with one strikeout. Shortly afterward, De los Santos was sent back to Triple-A.
âThe Yankeesâ fresh-armed reliever didnât last a day,â Randy Miller wrote for NJ.com. âCalled up from Triple-A on Tuesday, right-hander Yerry De los Santos mopped up for two innings in the Yankeesâ 7-1 loss to the Angels on Tuesday night, then immediately optioned back to Scranton/Wilkes-Barre.â
The Yankeesâ official announcements of the call up and subsequent option of De los Santos came less than nine hours apart on X. And now the team will have to bring in another arm to try and round out their beleaguered relief unit.
âTheyâll probably summon in right-hander Angel Chivilli, who has worked 8 1/3 scoreless innings over five Triple-A outings,â Miller added. âTraded by the (Colorado) Rockies to the Yankees last December, Chivilli has allowed only two hits with nine strikeouts and two walks.â
The Yankees might be more focused on the suddenly silent bats or the key start for Luis Gil on Wednesday. But even if those areas of the roster can get back on track, the bullpen looks to be pretty far away from a championship contending unit early in the season.
