There are a lot of ways that players can get hurt on a baseball field.
Rarely does it happen simply by catching the baseball, but that's what happened to New York Yankees first baseman Ben Rice on Sunday.
Rice was holding a runner on at first base, and Max Fried threw a pickoff that way. The throw was a bit low, and Rice reached down to snag it. The ball apparently hit Rice's glove, and the hand within it, in an odd way.
Initially, Rice stayed in the game. He hit a double in the bottom half of the inning. But then the Yankees removed him from action.
They called it a left hand contusion.
According to MLB.com, X-rays were negative, and Rice has been officially called day-to-day.
“It’s a little sore,” Rice told MLB.com postgame. “I thought the throw was going to be a little lower than it was. I went down and thought it would be in the dirt. Then it kind of stayed up in the end. I caught it poorly. It kind of hit in the palm.”

Rice is so locked in at the plate that even in a game he exited in the third inning he had a home run (his 12th of the year) and that aforementioned double.
Clearly, that's production that the Yankees won't want to lose, so they'll hope Rice's hand just heals up smoothly.
If Rice misses time, the veteran Paul Goldschmidt would see the action at first base. He delivered a two-run single on Sunday and clearly has been there and done that.
The Yanks would much prefer not to miss Rice at all, though. He's been one of baseball's best hitters this season.
