NEW YORK - Before tonight’s Subway Series opener, the Yankees downplayed the seriousness of Max Fried’s elbow issue.

“Longterm, feel like we’re in an OK spot,’’ said manager Aaron Boone, after the lefty ace was placed on the 15-day injury list due to an elbow bone bruise.

According to the Yankees, Fried will undergo repeat imaging (he had an MRI and CT scan Thursday) in “a few weeks or when asymptomatic before he can resume throwing.''

Meanwhile, ace Gerrit Cole (Tommy John surgery rehab) is due to make his latest minor league rehab start on Saturday, with one more rehab start expected before his return to the rotation.

“Don’t want to take him off track for a short-term need,’’ Boone said of activating Cole earlier than scheduled. “When he’s ready, we’ll insert him’’ into the rotation.

Right now, it's Cam Schlittler taking on the Mets at Citi Field...

Spencer Jones' RBI hit

In his sixth MLB game, this is Spencer Jones' first multi-hit night, with a 111-mph single off Clay Holmes' right foot, and an RBI single in the fifth against reliever Austin Warren, giving the Yanks a 4-0 lead.

Cam-do

Cam Schlittler's 1.35 ERA entering this game is the seventh lowest by a Yankees starter through the first nine starts of a season, dating to 1913.

And he's also got a nasty bruise on the back of his left calf, courtesy of a hot comebacker suffered in his last start, at Milwaukee.

Well, Schlittler has already taken a sharp grounder off his left ankle/foot - with Anthony Volpe deftly converting it into an out - and he's tossing a one-hitter through five innings, with eight strikeouts.

Yanks take the early lead

Entering tonight's game, Cody Bellinger's home-road splits were pretty drastic, to say the least.

At Yankee Stadium this year, he owns a 1.259 OPS in 19 games and all five of his homers have been hit in the Bronx.

On the road, Bellinger had a .516 OPS in 24 games.

“Part of it is, he is cut out for our ballpark,’’ Aaron Boone said before the game. “That said, I would think these things (would) balance out with how good of a player Belly is.’’

Well, Bellinger's two-out RBI single off a 1-2 curveball by Clay Holmes gave the Yanks a 1-0 lead in the third, and was immediately followed by Jazz Chisholm Jr.'s two-run double to right.
