2026 K League 2 Round 8 Preview
Round 8 in K League 2 brings added urgency as the table begins to take clearer shape. With several sides still searching for their first win and others starting to build momentum, this weekendâs fixtures highlight both ends of the spectrum. From a high-stakes clash between winless teams to promotion hopefuls looking to strengthen their position, the round offers a stronger indication of which teams are beginning to find their footing.
Chungbuk Cheongju vs Gimhae FC 2008
Three teams - Yongin FC, Gimhae FC 2008, and Chungbuk Cheongju - remain without a win after seven rounds of the K League 2 season. With fewer matches in this yearâs campaign, early momentum carries even greater weight, making that first victory all the more urgent. This round, Chungbuk Cheongju and Gimhae go head-to-head, each desperate to finally get off the mark.
Despite their winless record, Chungbuk Cheongjuâs performances have been far from poor. With five draws and two losses, they have remained competitive in most matches. In Round 7 against Cheonan City, they led 2-1 late on thanks to a brace from Lee Jong-eon. They continued to threaten with 18 total shots, maintaining compact spacing between defence and attack, but conceded a late equaliser to settle for a draw. With their movement from midfield continuing to create opportunities, improving their finishing remains the key task.
Gimhae, on the other hand, have followed a different trajectory. After losing all five of their opening matches, they picked up their first-ever point in professional football with a 1-1 draw away to Chungnam Asan in Round 7. They struggled to create chances in the first half but improved significantly after the break. Led by Bruno Costaâs distribution, players like Maissa Fall, Lee Seung-jae, and Beka Mikeltadze began to generate opportunities, finishing with 14 shots. However, only two were on target, highlighting the need for greater composure in front of goal. Reducing the gap in performance levels between the two halves will also be important.
The match between Chungbuk Cheongju and Gimhae kicks off on Saturday, April 18 at 4:30 PM at Cheongju Sports Complex.
Gimpo FC building momentum after a statement win
Gimpo FC pulled off one of the standout results of Round 7, defeating title contenders Suwon Samsung Bluewings 1-0 at Big Bird. While they were expected to face a difficult test, they executed their game plan effectively - absorbing pressure, limiting clear chances, and securing a valuable three points.
Head coach Ko Jeong-woonâs tactical approach proved decisive. Gimpo avoided being drawn into Suwonâs build-up play, instead cutting passing lanes and disrupting their rhythm. Whenever Suwon attempted to progress, players like Kim Do-hyuk, Djalma, and Connor Chapman applied intense pressure to halt their advances. With space tightly controlled, Suwon were largely restricted to circulating the ball in deeper and wider areas. Sensing an opportunity, Gimpo introduced Lee Si-heon, and the substitution paid off with the winning goal.
The result extended Gimpoâs unbeaten run to three matches (one win, two draws) and lifted them to sixth place.
They now travel to face Hwaseong, who ended a four-match winless streak (two draws, two losses) with a 1-0 win over Jeonnam in Round 7. The match takes place on Sunday, April 19 at 4:30 PM at Hwaseong Sports Complex.
Cheonan City's new attacking spark Gustavo Sarjani
Cheonan City are unbeaten in their last four matches (one win, three draws) as they push toward the middle of the pack. In Round 7 against Chungbuk Cheongju, they were second best for large spells but showed resilience to earn a 2-2 draw, with Gustavo Sarjani playing a key role.
The Brazilian winger, who joined Cheonan this season, made his K League debut in Round 3 and delivered a standout performance off the bench in Round 7, registering one goal and one assist.
With his side trailing, Sarjani made an immediate impact in the 54th minute, cutting in from the right and finishing with a composed strike into the corner to level the match. Later, in the 84th minute, he delivered a precise left-footed cross for Lee Joon-ho to score the equaliser. Despite limited opportunities, Sarjani demonstrated impressive efficiency and composure.
Cheonan now travel to face Daegu. While Daegu started the season strongly with three consecutive wins, they have since gone four matches without a victory (two draws, two losses). However, the return of Cesinhaâwho featured in the recent match against Suwon FCâoffers a timely boost.
The match between Daegu and Cheonan kicks off on Saturday, April 18 at 4:30 PM at DGB Daegu iM Bank Park.
