Here's a quick analysis of their first four picks.
The upside: The Giants did not expect Reese to fall to them at No. 5 overall, so they were ecstatic when he did. He will be a plus starter for them right away in the middle of their defense, who will also rush the passer at some point. He is considered to be the best defensive player and pass rusher in this draft. He can play anywhere, but they will start him inside, where they insist he was the best at that spot, too.
The downside: The Giants passed on Reese's teammates -- linebacker Sonny Styles and safety Caleb Downs -- two players who many experts had mocked to Big Blue and may be better fits than Reese. The Giants needed a run-stopping inside linebacker, and Styles specializes in that. They also needed a quarterback/centerfielder for John Harbaugh's defense, and Downs is tailor-made for that role. Adding to the mix: Styles went to Washington at No. 7 and Downs to Dallas four picks later. Uh-oh.
The upside: Mauigoa was the Giants' other top target in the draft. If Reese had not fallen to them, they claim they would have taken him at No. 5. They sat on their hands and watched as four teams passed on him. The room erupted when he fell to them at No. 10. He is a huge man, a mauler and a "bully" and just what the Giants need up front on offense.
The downside: They passed on Downs, again, and then announced that Mauigoa would be shifted inside to guard, a position he did not play in college. The Ravens took Penn State's Vega Ioane four picks later. He was considered the best guard in the draft by many experts. The Giants claim that Mauigoa will likely end up at tackle at some point, but still, they drafted the best tackle in the draft to play guard for them.
The upside: There's plenty. A first-round pick who fell to Round 2. Hood is a great press corner who can also play other roles. He was born to play in the NFL and has one of the most positive attitudes to come through the door in years. He could be a Day 1 starter. This is a major steal.
The downside: There really isn't one. The Giants should have run like thieves in the night after scoring Hood. They were offered several picks from other teams to move into that spot and wisely didn't bite.
The upside: Ask any general manager if he'd like a 6-foot-5, 220-pound receiver who has a 4.4 play speed with a massive catch radius, and they'll all say, 'Where do I sign?' The Giants had Fields marked from jump street and moved up to get him on Day 2 before the rest of the league noticed he was still on the board.
The downside: There's only one football, and now the Giants have a lot of mouths to feed. Not a bad problem to have. The return of Malik Nabers, who has been at the top of the NFL in targets since coming into the league, and the addition of tight end Isaish Likely will cut into the rookie's opportunities. Again, not a bad problem to have.
