The Los Angeles Angels are set to welcome new pitchers, including Kirby Yates and Alek Manoah, to their beleaguered staff. However, it's uncertain if these additions will improve their performance on the mound.
Angels Have Pitching Reinforcements Coming, But Will They Help Beleaguered Staff?
The Los Angeles Angels are getting some new pitchers, but it’s an open question as to whether they’ll actually help their pitching staff. Reliever Kirby Yates actually warmed up in the ninth of the Halos 8-2 win over the Chicago White Sox, and now Alek Manoah is on the way after completing his rehab assignment at Single A Rancho Cucamonga.
Manoah says he’s ready to go, despite allowing six runs, five of them earned, in 4-1/3 innings of work. It’s not unusual for pitchers to get hit around a little in the minors, but that’s more than a little, so it will be interesting to see how this plays out when Manoah pitches in his first game since May of 2024.
“It feels great,” Manoah said in an update written by Rhett Bollinger of MLB.com. “It's been 688 days since my surgery. So just excited to be here. It's been a fun journey. I'm thankful for all the ups and downs and everything in between. So just happy to be active.”
Manoah was signed on the cheap, like many Angels pitchers, for a one-year $1.95 million, but he struggled in the spring due to a fingernail issue. He did get his pitch count up to 87 in his last start in the minors on Saturday, so in that sense he is ready, and manager Kurt Suzuki will welcome his presence.
“Right now we need an arm in the bullpen,” manager Kurt Suzuki said. “So he'll be in the bullpen down there to give us an extra arm. And then we’ll reevaluate where we are after that.”
The Angels optioned out left-hander Sam Aldegheri to Triple-A Salt Lake, despite the fact that they were able to get four successful innings out of Aldegheri in his last outing as he gave up just two runs. Manoah volunteered to be brought up, and he has no issues with joining the bullpen for at least a while.
Alek Manoah's return is uncertain as he struggled in his rehab assignment, allowing six runs in 4-1/3 innings, but he is eager to contribute.
Alek Manoah last pitched in May 2024, marking a significant gap due to injury and recovery.
The Angels won their recent game against the Chicago White Sox with a score of 8-2.

“I am on that bullpen card,” Manoah said. “I just expressed my interest to Zuk and Perry and just told them, ‘I'm ready to go, whatever this team needs.’ So I’m ready to go whenever my name is called.”
It’s hard to be optimistic about this with Manoah’s velocity down to 90-91 mph, but this is how the Angels roll these days. Manoah knows he could be walking into a buzzsaw, but he’s okay with what he’s been doing.
“The big leagues isn't for comfort,” Manoah said. “It's like the lion and the gazelle. The gazelle wakes up in the morning, he knows he has to outrun the slowest lion or he's going to be dinner. And the lion wakes up in the morning knowing he's got to go catch the slowest gazelle so he can feed his family. Long story short, you’ve got to wake up and run. That's the name of the game. So comfort level, who cares about any of that stuff? Let's go play some baseball.”
