Catcher Francisco Alvarez exited Tuesday nightâs game against the Tigers with a right knee injury after fouling off a pitch in the sixth inning.
Alvarez swung hard on the two-strike heater from Detroit right-hander Burch Smith. Right as he made contact, it was clear something was wrong. Alvarez used his bat for support, leaning over for a second before hobbling out of the box.
Manager Carlos Mendoza trotted out of the Metsâ dugout with a member of the training staff and it didnât take long for Alvarez to come out of the game. He walked slowly to the dugout, limping slightly before disappearing down the steps into the Metsâ clubhouse.
Replays of the swing showed Alvarezâs back knee buckle ever so slightly. The Mets confirmed it was Alvarezâs knee that was injured with an announcement later in Tuesday nightâs game, adding that the catcher will have imaging on his knee on Wednesday.
Alvarez entered play Tuesday night hitting .296 in his previous eight games, raising his batting average on the year back up to .236. He beat out a double play ball to drive in a run in the second inning on Tuesday, doubling to left-center field in the fourth.

The Mets already have starting position players Francisco Lindor, Luis Robert Jr. and Jorge Polanco on the injured list. All three key hitters arenât close to returning from their injuries either.
If Alvarez were to miss time, backup catcher Luis Torrens â who entered in place of the backstop in the sixth and worked a walk, part of a three-run rally for the Mets â would surely take over in a full-time role. In all likelihood, Hayden Senger would get the call up from Triple-A to be Torrensâ backup.
