Brian Gutekunst unintentionally reveals what Packers truly need as front office keeps adding young talent to the 90-man roster

Devonshire was a seventh-round pick by the Las Vegas Raiders two years ago, but he hasn’t played regular season games in the NFL. After spending his entire rookie season on the Raiders’ practice squad, the defensive back has also been with the Carolina Panthers, Baltimore Ravens, and Buffalo Bills.

He had been in Buffalo since December. First, on the practice squad. Then, he signed a futures deal. Devonshire was waived on Monday, and the Packers didn’t lose time to get him.

MJ Devonshire is a 5-11, 190-pound player. He’s been on the field for five preseason games, and he actually played well for the Ravens last year. In 30 defensive snaps in exhibition games for Baltimore in 2025, he was targeted only once and didn’t allow a single completion. He received an 82.0 PFF coverage grade.

Tight end Luke Lachey

It’s not news that the Packers wanted an in-line tight end - Brian Gutekunst admitted so after the draft. So that’s what the Packers are getting with Lachey.

A 24-year-old player, he was a seventh-round pick by the Houston Texans last year and spent his rookie season on the practice squad. He had no regular season appearances, but played three preseason games for Houston. In those games, he was on the field for 56 passing snaps, playing in-line in almost 80% of them. Lachey had five receptions for 21 yards, generating an 81.3 passer rating when targeted.

Those two are obviously minor moves, but they clearly show that Brian Gutekunst is still trying to find value in the margins to complement what the roster currently has.
