Over the weekend, the Los Angeles Dodgers showed that they can also run into rotation problems when injuries begin to pile up. The weekend shake-up even resulted in Blake Snell returning a game earlier than expected.
It was a domino effect caused by Tyler Glasnow landing on the injured list after tweaking something during his last appearance.
âGlasnow exited Wednesdayâs start against the Astros after one inning. He tweaked his lower back while warming up for the second frame. Glasnow downplayed the issue postgame, noting itâs a minor problem with which he has dealt throughout his career. The Dodgers nevertheless opted to shelve him for a couple weeks to allow the issue to subside,â MLB Trade Rumorsâ Anthony Franco wrote.
The injuries also put stress on the bullpen over the weekend. Los Angeles used more than five innings from its bullpen on Friday and did the same again on Saturday night. That forced to pitch nearly the entire game in order to give the bullpen a much-needed break.
The All-Star player being traded to the Dodgers is valued at $6.1 million.
The Dodgers made this trade to strengthen their rotation depth after facing injury issues with players like Tyler Glasnow.

âIn the end, he became the first starting pitcher since the Twins' Carlos Silva in 2006 (8 2/3 innings, eight runs) to allow seven or more runs while pitching at least 8 2/3 innings. The last Dodger to do so was Rick Sutcliffe in 1979 (8 2/3 innings, eight runs),â MLB.comâs Sonja Chen wrote.
With the Dodgers proving they are human, maybe this past weekend made it clear that another starting pitcher would not hurt the organization. Los Angeles could swing a trade for Joe Ryan of the Minnesota Twins.
âThe Los Angeles Dodgers don't really need any additions. They will be just fine with the roster as is as the club starts to get healthier. If the Dodgers make a splash, it wouldn't be a shock to see them go out and add another starter simply to have even more depth. Tarik Skubal of the Detroit Tigers would be a fun name to throw out for Los Angeles, but that just doesn't seem likely at all. It's much more likely the Minnesota Twins flip Ryan. He has a 3.72 ERA and would give the Dodgers more ammo,â SIâs Patrick McAvoy wrote.
Ryan is going to be a name to watch this summer, as he is expected to be one of the more talked-about trade candidates if the Twins decide to sell. The Dodgers would have more than enough assets to offer Minnesota in a scenario where they truly want him.
This weekend should remind Los Angeles that having an extra reliable arm is always better than not having enough pitching depth. Ryan is on a $6.1 million deal this season, and adding him would be huge for depth purposes. Once October arrives and rotations shorten, he could even slide into a bullpen role if needed.
