Ryan Ward finally got to make his MLB debut on Sunday, and he notched two hits for the Los Angeles Dodgers.
He's 28 years old and has been an absolute beast at Triple-A, but he's simply in the wrong organization. Where is a first baseman supposed to break through when Freddie Freeman always plays and Shohei Ohtani always is the DH?
ESPN's David Schoenfield singled out Ward in a new article on Monday, and he wrote that the Dodgers should trade him.
It's not that L.A. has any specific needs in return. He just thinks it'd be a kind thing to do for Ward's career.
"Free Ryan Ward! Look, if the Dodgers need to upgrade, they can always trade one of their outfield prospects, but barring a long list of catastrophic injuries, they don't have to do anything," Schoenfield wrotes. "Maybe, out of the kindness of their hearts, they will trade Ward. The 28-year-old, who's on their 40-man roster, deserves an opportunity to play. He made his debut for the Dodgers Sunday with two hits and one RBI. He hit .290/.380/.557 with 36 home runs last year at Triple-A and was hitting even better in the minors this year. Surely, some team can use him and give him a shot?"

Now, he's the age of guys who sometimes are never given a chance, but he's also continued to get better every season. It's fair to think that Ward could actually be a big-time bat in someone's lineup.
It doesn't really help the Dodgers to deal him away, but it's the kind of move fans of baseball in general could get behind.
