Athletics defeat Royals 5-2, Butler hits three-run homer

The Pavia family celebrates as Diego signs with the Baltimore Ravens and Abby receives two more Division I offers from Utah State and Air Force, bringing her total to four offers.
Mentioned in this story
It has been a week of good news in the Pavia household. Diego signed as a free agent with the Baltimore Ravens, and his younger sister Abby Pavia, the sensational freshman guard for Albuquerque High, collected two more Division I offers.
Utah State first, and then Air Force, have extended offers to the 5-foot-6 Pavia, a dynamic combo guard for the Bulldogs.
Pavia is up to four offers. UNLV is one of the other two, along with Mount St. Mary’s.
She did have an offer from UNM, but that was a Mike Bradbury offer and once the Lobos separated from him, the offer to Pavia went out the door.
However, Pavia does have an unofficial visit scheduled Thursday with the Lobos, AHS coach Teri Morrison said.
SIGNINGS: Albuquerque High and St. Pius have signing classes to announce.
The Bulldogs’ signing class is led by Kaelynn Ashley, who signed to play indoor volleyball with Division I Austin Peay University in Tennessee.
One of AHS’ top softball players, Raquel Waldrop, signed with the University of Colorado at Colorado Springs. Two of Waldrop’s teammates also signed, Annika Stanley and Aurora Green, both with Yavapai College in Prescott, Arizona.
Other signees from AHS: Sergio Cisneros (Western New Mexico; football), Danica Pantoja (Newberry College, South Carolina; girls soccer), Addie Harper (Loyola University, Maryland; girls track and field), Amin Cooper (Fort Lewis College in Durango; boys track and field), Maliyah Lee (Northern NM College; girls basketball) and Merin Schmidt (University of Puget Sound in Tacoma, Washington; girls swimming).
St. Pius’ signing class is headlined by multiple state champion wrestler Valentine Popadiuc, who has signed with D-1 Iowa State.
Maya Perea from the Sartans’ Class 4A state championship-winning volleyball program is signing with Eastern New Mexico. Several other Sartans are taking the beach volleyball route. Mireya Sauceda Gonzalez is signing with Wingate University in North Carolina, Aliyah Lucero is signing with Ottawa University in Arizona; and Alyssa Bendinskas has signed with Austin Peay.
Other signees from St. Pius: Sophia Trujillo (Luna Community College, NM; softball); Danira Madrid (U.S. Merchant Marine Academy; swimming); Audrey Phelps (Whittier College in California; swimming); Dane Padilla (Colorado State University-Pueblo; wrestling); Kaiden Swanson (NM Military Institute; baseball); Nathaniel Miera (Arizona Christian; baseball); Zoe Mangrum (Howard University; softball).
Soccer player Mateo Certain is signing with Select Generation FC in England.
COACHING UPDATE: St. Pius has hired Shawn Fisher to be its new boys basketball coach. He is a former boys and girls assistant coach with the Sartans, and also has worked as an assistant at both Sandia and Highland.
This is his first varsity head coaching job. He replaces Ryan Myers, who said he was asked to resign following last season.
Abby Pavia has received offers from Utah State, Air Force, UNLV, and Mount St. Mary’s.
Abby Pavia lost her offer from UNM after the Lobos parted ways with coach Mike Bradbury.
Abby Pavia's unofficial visit with the Lobos is scheduled for Thursday.
