There were 5,512 votes cast in the race for the Joe Orthodontics High School Athlete of the Week poll.
Granite Hills swimmer Sosetina Esquibel ended with 65.95% of total votes cast by Daily Press readers.
The freshman received 2,316 votes, beating out seven other high school athletes from across the High Desert.
To earn a spot on the ballot, Esquibel placed third in the 50 freestyle with a time of 25.51 seconds. She also swam on Granite Hillsā 4x50 freestyle relay team that finished in 1:48.84 and the fifth-place 4x100 freestyle relay team that finished in 4:04.86. At the prelims on May 5, Esquibel placed fourth in the 50 freestyle at 25.84 seconds.

In the voting, Esquibel beat University Prep's Jocelyn Lopez, who received 25.74% at 904 total votes.
The nominees were selected based on performances between May 4 and 9.
Nominations are based on information available to the Daily Press. All high school varsity players from the High Desert can be considered for the ballot.
Nominations must be received for consideration by Sunday morning following that week's games. Anyone can nominate an Athlete of the Week for every varsity sport.

How long have you been swimming and how did you get started: I started learning to swim when I was around the age of three or four. I got started by just joining the water polo team and realizing I have a passion for swimming.
What do you like most about swimming: The connections I make with other schools and becoming friends with so many people.
Do you have a pregame ritual: Hydrating and eating carbs. Sometimes, I will listen to a song on repeat to not make me so nervous.
Whatās your most memorable sports moment: Hearing my team and my family in the stands cheering me on during my race.
If you could be someone else for a day, who would it be and why: I would be Moana.
Someone hands you $1 million, how would you spend it: I would spend it on clothes & jewelry.
Where would you go if you could travel anywhere in the world and why: I would travel to Western Samoa, because I love learning about the culture there and I would love to learn more Polynesian dances.
If you had an extra hour every day, how would you spend it: I would spend it by reading more about my churchās teachings to partake in the Lordās Supper, to understand what I believe in.
Do you have any hobbies: Crafts, swimming, working out and journaling.
What superpower do you wish you had: Super speed, because I could be the worldās fastest person and maybe swimmer.
Favorite sports team: I really have no idea what my favorite team is because Iāve never been into watching games. So I donāt really have one.
Favorite athlete: Katie Ledecky, because she is one of the fastest womenās swimmers and she is such an inspiration for me.
