The Atlanta Falcons have until July 15 to finalize a long-term deal with tight end Kyle Pitts, who is currently under a franchise tag. This deadline coincides with a quiet period in the NFL calendar after the release of the 2026 schedule.
After the NFL releases the 2026 regular season schedule tomorrow evening, we will reach the quietest portion of the league's calendar year, when news is rarely made until training camp begins at the end of July.
The Atlanta Falcons might still make a couple of splashes during this dead time, though. The front office's next big priorities are working out long-term contract extensions for wide receiver Drake London and tight end Kyle Pitts, who has signed his franchise tag.
Pitts is one of two tagged players around the league that have yet to sign a new deal, along with Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens. Per Kristopher Knox at Bleacher Report, they have until July 15 to work out a new deal.
"Dallas Cowboys receiver George Pickens and Atlanta Falcons tight end Kyle Pitts were also given the franchise tag. Both have signed their tenders, and both have until 4 p.m. ET on July 15 to sign a long-term extension. Otherwise, their only option will be to play under the tag and be eligible for free agency again in 2027."
Pitts playing under the franchise tag would cost the Falcons a fully-guaranteed $15 million. Extending him would save them just over $11 million, according to Over the Cap - so they have a big incentive to get the deal done.
Progress has been slow for Pitts, but he has steadily improved over time since being drafted No. 4 overall back in 2021. He's coming off a breakout season, having posted career highs in catches (88) and touchdowns (five). His 928 receiving yards were by far the most since his rookie year (1,026).
The Falcons were rumored to be shopping Pitts ahead of the NFL Draft, but nothing came of it. If they believe he will continue to grow, Pitts should be worth every penny of a major extension.
Kyle Pitts has until 4 p.m. ET on July 15 to sign a long-term extension.
If Kyle Pitts does not sign a new deal by the deadline, he will play under the franchise tag and be eligible for free agency in 2027.
Along with Kyle Pitts, Dallas Cowboys wide receiver George Pickens is another player who has received a franchise tag and is negotiating a new deal.
