How Noah Sullivan's mustache turned DH into a Mississippi State baseball fan favorite
STARKVILLE — Every Mississippi State baseball game at Dudy Noble Field features a promotion called “Little Dude of the Game.”
In between innings, usually on the earlier side of the game, a young fan is interviewed live on the video board in right field. It starts with simple questions, like “How old are you?” and “Where are you from?”
At the end, the child is asked who their favorite Mississippi State player is.
Noah Sullivan is a common answer.
It helps that Sullivan is in his second season as the Bulldogs’ designated hitter and usually bats third or fourth in the order. He was their midweek starting pitcher last season, too. He also has a curly handlebar mustache that fans adore, similar to Baseball Hall of Fame pitcher Rollie Fingers.
Sullivan’s nickname is “Mustache Man.” A few fans, typically kids, even wear fake mustaches to Mississippi State games.
“Obviously we’re watching all the stuff on the jumbotron, too, so it’s really cool to almost make you feel like you've made an impact on someone’s life,” Sullivan said. “This game goes a lot further than just playing the game. There’s a lot of people that look up to us and we have a lot of responsibility in that. It’s really cool to feel like we’ve made an impression on these kids.”
The mustache started from a whimsical idea from a former MSU assistant coach.
Sullivan transferred to Mississippi State before the 2025 season after three seasons at USC Upstate, the only Division I offer he had from high school. The Orlando, Florida, native already had a mustache before Mississippi State, but not with the curls he has now on game days.
Former assistant coach Jake Gautreau, who is now at East Carolina, came up with the idea in the fall of 2024.

“I just had a regular mustache and Coach Gautreau, shoutout to Coach Gautreau, he told me, ‘Hey grow it out. I’ve got some mustache wax for you,’” Sullivan said. “He brought it the next day from practice. He was like, ‘Try this out and see what we can do with it.’ Ever since then, it’s kind of stuck.”
Sullivan curls his mustache before every Mississippi State game but only does it for games.
He had a breakout 2025 season at MSU, starting all 59 games and batting .345 with 15 home runs, 46 RBIs and 63 runs. As a pitcher, Sullivan posted a 1.96 ERA in 18⅓ innings — all in midweek games.
Eventually, a few fans started wearing fake mustaches at games. Sullivan and Mississippi State have no idea who started it or why.
“I remember at the regional somebody had mustaches, and they were just handing them out to everybody,” Sullivan said. “I looked up on the video board at Florida State and my grandma’s got a mustache on.”
The No. 11 Bulldogs play their final regular season games at Dudy Noble Field May 7-9 against No. 6 Auburn. They are expected to make the NCAA Tournament but are still fighting to host a regional in Starkville for the first time since 2021.
Sullivan is in his final year of eligibility. His plan is to play professionally after Mississippi State.
He also got engaged in December. Sullivan did not have the mustache curls for his proposal on the beach and won’t for the wedding either.
“She loves the mustache,” Sullivan said. “Sometimes she’s not sure about the extra curls. She’s always telling me to trim it up if it’s looking too long or whatever the case may be.”
