A century from New Zealand opener Finn Allen at the Arun Jaitley Stadium on Friday night handed Kolkata Knight Riders their fourth victory in a row to keep their playoff hopes alive.
A total of 142 for eight was simply not enough on a ground where KKR's batters were in full flow.
Allen had spent much of this season getting starts and throwing them away. The habit of going too hard too early had cost him on several occasions.
However, on Friday, he was a different player. Allen read the situation clearly, and as KKR were not chasing a big total, he chose patience over impulse.
At the end of the powerplay, Allen was sitting on just 20 runs off 16 balls. Then, when the wrist-spinners, Kuldeep Yadav and Vipraj Nigam, were introduced, he shifted gears. Allen launched both of them into the stands and went on to score the next 80 runs in just 30 balls.

KKR's fourth consecutive win keeps their playoff hopes alive in the tournament.
Delhi Capitals have suffered their seventh defeat, putting their season in jeopardy.
Cameron Green played a supportive role in Finn Allen's achievement during the match.

Allen and Cameron Green put together a partnership of 116 for the third wicket to help KKR get over the line. Green, speaking after the match, was generous in his assessment of the evening.
With just three runs required, Green was on strike while Allen was stuck on 94. The former managed to take a single on the first ball, helping the Kiwi batter to make an attempt to clear the boundary and reach his century.
"It was special, not often you get to stay at the non-strikers. All Finn said was 'see you next over', and I played second fiddle. Did the math 29 runs off, knew I'd be the most hated player in Kolkata if I didn't help him get the ton."
"Winning has been satisfying, bowlers have been great, spin exceptional. Can't look far ahead, gotta win every game from here."
Meanwhile, Allen acknowledged the frustration of a first half where runs came and went without ever turning into something substantial.
"I've got a few starts, frustrating not to carry on, nice to have some personal success. When the situation comes, you forget about your batting and focus on the situation," he said.
"I knew if I stayed out for a long time, 40 balls, doesn't happen too often [I'd score enough]. Sometimes, being left out changes your perspective. Allows time for mental refresh. I was putting on too much pressure on myself."
Allen's hundred was only the fourth in KKR's entire IPL history, and the numbers next to each name are extraordinary.
Brendon McCullum blazed 158 not out off 73 balls against RCB back in 2008 in the very first IPL match ever played.
Venkatesh Iyer made 104 off 51 against the Mumbai Indians at the Wankhede in 2023. Sunil Narine cracked 109 off 56 against the Rajasthan Royals in Kolkata in 2024. And now Allen joins that list with 100 not out off 47 against Delhi in 2026
| Rank | Player | Score | Opponent | Venue | Season |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Brendon McCullum | 158* (73) | Royal Challengers Bangalore | Bengaluru | 2008 |
| 2 | Sunil Narine | 109 (56) | Royal Challengers Bangalore | Bengaluru | 2017 |
| 3 | Venkatesh Iyer | 104 (51) | Mumbai Indians | Mumbai | 2023 |
| 4 | Finn Allen | 100* (47) | Delhi Capitals | Delhi | 2026 |
Anyone who has watched Allen bat, even briefly, knows he has the tools to dismantle any attack on his day. What was missing was the mental clarity to let it happen.
By his own admission, he had been forcing things, trying to justify his place rather than just playing. Friday's knock felt like a release. When a player stops batting for the scoreboard and starts batting for the situation, good things tend to follow.
KKR will hope this is not a one-off. With four wins in a row and the playoffs within sight, they need Allen to carry this version of himself into every game that remains.
