Jazz Chisholm expressed frustration over his poor performance, hitting .200 with four homers and 14 RBIs this season. Despite his struggles, he insists that free agency is not on his mind yet.
BALTIMORE ā Jazz Chisholm stood at his locker holding court Tuesday afternoon because he was too frustrated to talk the night before after another nothing game at the plate, an 0-for-4 with three strikeouts in a one-run Yankees loss at Oriole Park.
Before Tuesday nightās 6-2 Yankees win, Chisholm tried to make sense of whatās been a brutal start to his season. After going 0-for-1 in a reserve role Tuesday, heās hitting .200 with four homers, 14 RBIs and 11 steals in 42 games.
Thatās not going to get the two-time All-Star close to another 30-30, let alone his āshoot for the starsā dream, the second 50-50 ever. Numbers like this wonāt get him the $35 million per year heāll be chasing as a free agent next winter either ⦠if the anticipated MLB lockout is settled in time to have an offseason.
Chisholm said heās frustrated because āwhen youāre not producing for your team, it sucks.ā But no, he insisted, free agency is not weighing on him because āitās too early for that.ā He added that heās felt locked in here and there, but when it comes, heās āusually lining out.ā
After a few minutes of that, Chisholm perked up talking about Tuesdayās return of his old double-play partner. With Jose Caballero going on the IL with a small break in his right middle finger, Anthony Volpe is back with the Yankees nine days after his return from offseason labrum surgery turned into an option to Triple-A.

Volpe never used his injury as an excuse for his poor 2025 season, but Chisholm brought it up unprompted.
āI feel like heās pretty much a tough kid,ā Chisholm said. āHe played a whole season injured.ā
Almost.
Volpe partially tore his left labrum diving in the Yankeesā 33rd game last year. He made it through the season thanks to at least two cortisone shots, but his 19 errors and .963 fielding percentage ranked last among regular AL shortstops. His .212 batting average and 25.2% strikeout rate were big disappointments.
āHe was sticking his butt out there for the team,ā Chisholm added. āHe easily could have sat down a whole year last year and get his shoulder right. But he stuck it out for us and we made the playoffs. I mean, he was the starting shortstop last year for a playoff team ... for the last two years. To be able to do that, that should just show you how tough he is.
āTo go put his body on the line and his career on the line for us to go out there to go try and win the championship. So for me, I think heās a pretty tough kid.ā
Volpe did contribute some offense, too. His 19 homers and 72 RBIs were career-highs.
Before returning, Volpe received a pep talk over the phone from Chisholm.
āI talked to him a little bit,ā Chisholm said. āI feel like this is what heās made for. He knows New York better than anybody. Heās from Jersey. So for me, I feel like heās gonna be alright.
āItās been tough being hurt and trying to come back from what heās gone through, but heās built for this. We both think heās gonna be great.ā
At least for a few games, Volpe will get a chance to redeem himself. Heāll be the starter on most days while Caballero is sidelined, manager Aaron Boone said. But after 10 days, Caballero could be off the IL, and whenever that occurs heāll go back to starting.
āYeah,ā Boone said. āHeās played as well as anyone out there, so that would be my expectation.ā
When that occurs, the Yankees could keep Max Schuemann as their reserve infielder because he can play second, short and third, plus corner outfield. Because of this versatility, Volpe could find himself back in Triple-A.
āWeāll see what makes the most sense,ā Boone said. āI wouldnāt commit to one way or another on that right now.ā
If Volpe ends up back in Scranton, he may be told to start playing some second and third base because a utility role could be his best and fastest path to sticking with the Yankees again at some point.
However this plays out, Volpe will continue getting a lot of support from his double-play partner.
āI love Volpe,ā Chisholm said. āWe all know that. Me and Volpe have a special bond of how we are.ā
Chisholm is a fan of the shortstop heās played with this season, too. He knows Caballeroās hitting, stealing and fielding have been major contributions to a 27-16 ballclub.
āIt sucks, especially for (Caballero),ā Chisholm said. āYou get a chance to start and play every day and show what youāve got. Especially that heās playing really well, it kind of sucks that heās gonna not be out there, especially how weāve been playing. A big part of it is because of his game, so that kind of sucks, too.ā
