May 1 (UPI) -- Nikola Jokic said his team is far from contending for an NBA championship, but he wants to remain with the Denver Nuggets "forever."
Jokic made his comments after the Nuggets' 110-98 loss to the Minnesota Timberwolves in Game 6 of their first round series Thursday in Minneapolis.
With the victory, the Timberwolves won the series 4-2 and eliminated the Nuggets from the playoffs in the first round for just the second time of Jokic's tenure with the franchise.
"We just lost in the first round," Jokic said. "So, I think we are far away [from contending for a title]."
Jokic, an NBA MVP finalist, totaled 28 points, 10 assists and nine rebounds. He also made just 1 of 5 attempts from 3-point range and registered four turnovers.
The Serbian said the Timberwolves were "better in every aspect of the game." He credited the Minnesota's ball security and offense rebounding as keys to its performance.
The sixth-seeded Timberwolves narrowly outshot the No. 3 Nuggets 45.7% to 45.3%. They held a 50-33 edge in rebounding. They also totaled just seven turnovers, compared to the Nuggets' 13.
"I'm disappointed," Jokic said. "I don't know what's the level of it."
Timberwolves forward Jaden McDaniels totaled a game-high 32 points, 10 rebounds, three assists, two steals and a block. Guard Terrence Shannon Jr. totaled 24 points. Center Rudy Gobert totaled 10 points, 13 rebounds and eight assists for the Timberwolves.
Jokic, 31, signed a five-year, $276.1 million contract extension with the Nuggets in 2022. He is to make $59 million next season and has a $62.8 million player option for 2027-28. That status has prompted questions on if Jokic will sign another extension and/or be traded. But the three-time NBA MVP said he wants to remain with the Nuggets.
Nikola Jokic stated that the team is not at the level needed to compete for an NBA championship after their recent playoff loss.
Jokic expressed a strong desire to remain with the Nuggets 'forever,' despite the team's current struggles.
The Nuggets were eliminated in the first round of the playoffs by the Minnesota Timberwolves, losing the series 4-2.

"I still want to be a Nugget forever," Jokic said.
He declined to say if he would sign an extension, if the Denver offered it.
The eight-time All-Star, seven-time All-NBA selection and 2022-23 NBA Finals MVP is coming off one of the best seasons of his career, in which he averaged 27.7 points and led the NBA with 12.9 rebounds and 10.7 assists per game.
The Nuggets finished the regular season with the third-best record (54-28) in the Western Conference, trailing only the league-best Oklahoma City Thunder (64-18) and San Antonio Spurs (62-20).
They averaged a league-high 122.1 points per game and logged the second-best field goal percentage (49.6) in the NBA. They led the league in 3-point percentage (39.6).
The Nuggets averaged nearly 15 fewer points per game this postseason. They made 43.6% of their shots, including 31.1% from 3-point range, the third-worst clip of any postseason team.
Injuries ravaged their lineup, with wings Aaron Gordon and Peyton Wilson missing crucial postseason minutes. But Jokic said he wouldn't cite those injuries as an excuse for the Nuggets' collapse.
"I couldn't get guys open," Jokic said. "I couldn't make screens. I couldn't make shots. They were just better in basically every aspect of the game. We put up a fight, but we didn't have it."
The No. 2 Spurs will meet the Timberwolves in Game 1 of a Western Conference semifinals series Monday in San Antonio.
The winner of that best-of-seven game series will face the top-seeded Thunder or the winner of the first-round series between the No. 4 Los Angeles Lakers and No. 5 Houston Rockets in the Western Conference finals.
