LAS VEGAS – Norma Dumont couldn't believe she was on the wrong end of the decision reading following her fight with Joselyne Edwards at UFC Fight Night 273. Her face was one of complete shock.
Saturday in the UFC Fight Night 274 co-main event at Meta APEX, Edwards (18-6 MMA, 9-4 UFC) upset Dumont (13-3 MMA, 9-3 UFC) to win a unanimous decision that read 29-28, 29-28, and 30-27 in favor of the Panamanian. Although Dumont appeared in disbelief, Edwards wasn't, along with many commenting online.
"I don't even know why she reacted that way," Edwards said in Spanish speaking to MMA Junkie and other reporters at the UFC Fight Night 273 post-fight press conference. "I knew I had won. She let me control her in the cage, and those points went in my favor. I did a good job, and she was running a lot. I did more damage than her. I think I won my fight clearly. I was at ease, and I knew the decision was mine. I don't know why she reacted that way. I think she maybe just couldn't believe (I beat her)."
With the upset win, Edwards is expected to take a big leap in the UFC women's bantamweight rankings. She came in ranked No. 11 and beat No. 3. This win put her at a 5-0 run that includes two KO and two submission finishes. For Edwards, locking in and taking a good look at what she was doing wrong before the winning streak has vastly changed her UFC career.
"I've taken a good look and have analyzed myself," Edwards said reflecting on her current form. "This career is short, especially for us women. I looked at what I needed to wake up because the losses that I've had in the UFC have all been dumb and because I didn't keep my cool. I've failed to know when the moment is. I feel like I needed to have more patience, more calm. I felt I was complete and I had the skills, but I just didn't know how to execute. I simply did the adjustments I needed to do and this year I'm ready to kill whoever I need to kill to get that belt."
